On Tuesday, October 13th, 1903, the Boston Americans (now known as the Boston Red Sox) defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds in Boston to clinch the first ever World Series five games to three. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. Deacon Phillippe (Pirates)- P
Phillippe started in five games, going 3-2 while allowing a total of 15 earned runs over the course of 44 innings pitched for a 3.07 ERA. However, his performance in game three earned him player of the game honors.
4. Chick Stahl (Americans)- CF
Stahl also played in all eight games as the team’s primary center fielder, and was player of the game in game six. Stahl drove in three RBIs with 10 hits, one walk and six runs, earning a batting average of .303.
3. Lou Criger (Americans)- C
Criger caught in all eight games and was the player of the game in game seven, hitting four RBIs with six hits, a pair of walks and a run with a batting average of .231.
2. Cy Young (Americans)- P
Young, the player of the game in game five started three games in the series and was a reliever in another game, as he gave up just seven earned runs over the course of 34 innings for an ERA of 1.85.
1. Bill Dinneen (Americans)- P
Dinneen started four games in the series, going 3-1 while allowing a total of eight earned runs over 35 innings pitched for an ERA of 2.06. Was the player of the game in games two and eight.
