On Wednesday, October 16th, 1912, the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York (now San Francisco) Giants at Fenway Park in Boston to clinch the ninth World Series four games to three, with one tie. It was the second World Series championship for the Red Sox franchise and the first that was won in Massachusetts. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. Fred Merkle (Giants)- 1B
Merkle earned player of the game honors in game six, with an RBI along with two hits and a run as the Giants took the 5-2 win. Overall, Merkle got three RBI along with five runs and nine hits, with a .273 batting average.
4. Larry Doyle (Giants)- 2B
Doyle was game seven’s player of the game, driving in two RBIs on three runs and three hits in an 11-4 Giants victory. Doyle had a pair of RBIs along with five runs, eight hits and three walks over the course of the series.
3. Rube Marquard (Giants)- P
Marquard earned the player of the game in game three, pitching a complete game with one earned run given up along with seven hits and a walk in the 2-1 win. Marquard also pitched in game six, earning the win there as well.
2. Hugh Bedient (Red Sox)- P
Bedient was the player of the game in games five and eight, picking up a complete game shutout in game five, with three hits and three walks in the Red Sox 2-1 victory. Game eight saw Bedient pitch seven innings with one earned run given up on six hits and three walks as the Red Sox won it 3-2 in 10 innings to claim the series.
1. Smoky Joe Wood (Red Sox)- P
