On Thursday, October 13th, 1921, the New York (now San Francisco) Giants defeated the New York Yankees at Polo Grounds in New York to clinch the 18th World Series five games to three. It was the second World Series championship for the Giants franchise and the fourth that was won in New York. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. High Pockets Kelly (Giants)- 1B
Kelly was game six’s player of the game, as he had a pair of RBIs with a run, three hits and a walk as the Giants won 8-5.
4. Ross Youngs (Giants)- RF
Youngs earned player of the game honors in game three, with four RBIs on two runs, two hits and two walks. The Giants went on to win 13-5 to earn their first win of the series.
3. Art Nehf (Giants)- P
Nehf was player of the game in game eight, pitching a complete game shutout with just four hits given up and five walks. The Giants won it 1-0 to claim the series victory.
2. Waite Hoyt (Yankees)- P
Hoyt earned player of the game in games two and five, giving the Yankees a complete game shutout with two hits and five walks as they won 3-0, then had another complete game with no earned runs with 10 hits and a pair of walks in the Yankees’ 3-1 win.
1. Phil Douglas (Giants)- P
Douglas got player of the game in games four and seven, with two earned runs allowed on seven hits in a complete game as the Giants won 4-2, before going another complete game with one earned run on eight hits and one walk, with the Giants winning 2-1.
