On Monday, October 15th, 1923, the New York Yankees defeated the New York (now San Francisco) Giants at Polo Grounds in New York to win the 20th World Series four games to two. It was the first World Series championship for the Yankees franchise and the sixth that was won in New York. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. Art Nehf (Giants)- P
Nehf makes player of the game in game three, pitching a complete game shutout with six hits and three walks given up, as the Giants went on to win 1-0.
4. Bob Meusel (Yankees)- LF
Meusel was player of the game in game six with a pair of RBIs and a hit, as the Yankees went on to win it 6-4 and win the series.
3. Everett Scott (Yankees)- SS
Scott earned player of the game honors in game four, as he hit two RBIs with a run and two hits as the Yankees took the 8-4 victory.
2. Joe Dugan (Yankees)- 3B
Dugan grabbed player of the game in game five with a spectacular performance, getting three RBIs on three runs and four hits in the Yankees’ 8-1 victory.
1. Herb Pennock (Yankees)- P
Pennock was player of the game in game two, getting a complete game with two earned runs allowed on nine hits and a walk as the Yankees claimed the 4-2 victory.
