On Monday, October 11th, 1943, the New York Yankees defeated the St. Louis Cardinals at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis to win the 40th World Series four games to one. It was the 10th World Series championship for the Yankees franchise and the third that was won in Missouri. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #5 Ray Sanders (Cardinals)- 1B
Sanders picked up player of the game in game two, as he got a pair of RBIs with a run and a hit as the Cardinals took their only win of the series 4-3.
4. #6 Joe Gordon (Yankees)- 2B
Gordon had an RBI along with a run, a hit and a walk to get player of the game in game one, as the Yankees went on to win it 4-2.
3. #7 Billy Johnson (Yankees)- 3B
Johnson earned player of the game honors in game three, getting three RBIs along with a run and a hit as the Yankees won 6-2.
2. #21 Spud Chandler (Yankees)- P
Chandler picked up player of the game in game five, going all nine innings while allowing no earned runs on 10 hits and a pair of walks as the Yankees won 2-0 to claim the series.
1. #22 Marius Russo (Yankees)- P
Russo was game four’s player of the game, pitching a complete game with no earned runs allowed on seven hits and a walk in the Yankees’ 2-1 victory.
