On Tuesday, October 16th, 1962, the New York Yankees defeated the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park in San Francisco to win the 59th World Series four games to three. It was the 20th World Series championship for the Yankees franchise and the first that was won in California. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #33 Jack Sanford (Giants)- P
Sanford earned player of the game honors in game two, going all nine innings while allowing no earned runs on three hits and three walks as the Giants claimed the 2-0 win.
4. #9 Roger Maris (Yankees)- RF
Maris, best known for setting a single-season home run record the previous year, got player of the game in game one, picking up two RBIs with a run, two hits and a walk in the Yankees’ 6-2 victory.
3. #15 Tom Tresh (Yankees)- LF
Tresh earned player of the game in game five, getting three RBIs with a pair of runs and a pair of hits as the Yankees claimed a 5-3 victory.
2. #22 Bill Stafford (Yankees)- P
Stafford pitched his was to player of the game honors in game three, going all nine innings with two earned runs allowed with four hits and two walks in the Yankees’ 3-2 win.
1. #23 Ralph Terry (Yankees)- P
Terry grabbed player of the game honors in game seven, earning a complete game shutout while allowing just four hits with no walks as the Yankees got the series championship as they won 1-0.
