On Tuesday, October 17th, 1978, the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles to win the 75th World Series four games to two. It was the 22nd World Series championship for the Yankees franchise and the fifth that was won in California. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #15 Davey Lopes (Dodgers)- 2B
Lopes earned player of the game in game one, getting five RBIs with two runs and two hits as the Dodgers started off the series with an 11-5 win.
4. #46 Burt Hooton (Dodgers)- P
Hooton grabbed player of the game honors in game two, going six innings while allowing three earned runs on eight hits and a walk as the Dodgers took a 4-3 victory.
3. #6 Roy White (Yankees)- LF
White picked up game three’s player of the game with an RBI along with two runs and one hit, as the Yankees went on to win 5-1.
2. #20 Bucky Dent (Yankees)- SS
Dent was game six’s player of the game as he knocked in three RBIs on three hits to help the Yankees to take a 7-2 win to earn the series championship.
1. #15 Thurman Munson (Yankees)- C
Munson grabbed player of the game honors in games four and five, as he drove in an RBI with a run, a pair of hits and a pair of walks as the Yankees won it 4-3 in 10 innings, while game five saw him knock in five RBIs with a run and three hits in the Yankees’ 12-2 victory.
