Top 5 Players of the 1907 World Series
By Zane Miller On Saturday, October 12th, 1907, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Detroit Tigers at Bennett Park in Detroit to clinch the fourth World Series four games to none, with one tie. It was the first World Series championship for the Cubs franchise and the first that was won in Michigan. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series. 5. Bill Donovan (Tigers)- P Donovan was the player of the game in game one, which resulted in a 3-3 tie, the first ever tie in a World Series game. Donovan pitched all 12 innings in the game, allowing one earned run on 10 hits and three walks in the no decision. 4. Harry Steinfeldt (Cubs)- 3B Steinfeldt was the player of the game in game three as he had one RBI along with a run, two hits and a walk on the way to a 5-1 victory. On the series, Steinfeldt had two RBIs to go along with two runs, eight hits and a walk for a batting average of .471. 3. Jack Pfiester (Cubs)- P Pfiester earned player of the game honors in game two, pitching all nine innings while allowing an earned run on 10 hits and a walk in the 3-1 win, the only game Pfiester was a starting pitcher in the series. 2. Mordecai Brown (Cubs)- P Brown was the player of the game in game five to win the series for the Cubs, pitching a complete game shutout, allowing seven hits and a walk in a 2-0 victory in his lone pitching appearance of the series. 1. Orval Overall (Cubs)- P Overall, the game four player of the game, not only driving in two RBI along with a hit, but also pitching a complete game with one earned run given up on five hits and a pair of walks in the 6-1 victory. Overall also played in game one, pitching nine innings while allowing one earned run on nine hits and two walks. In total, Overall pitched 18 innings, giving up two earned runs on 14 hits and four walks for a 1.00 ERA.
