Top 5 Players of the 1946 World Series
By Zane Miller On Tuesday, October 15th, 1946, the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Boston Red Sox at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis to win the 43rd World Series four games to three. It was the sixth World Series championship for the Cardinals franchise and the fifth that was won in Missouri. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series. 5. #21 Tex Hughson (Red Sox)- P Hughson picked up player of the game honors in game one, pitching eight innings while allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks as the Red Sox went on to win 3-2 in 11 innings. 4. #4 Marty Marion (Cardinals)- SS Marion got player of the game in game six, grabbing an RBI along with two hits as the Cardinals won it 4-1. 3. #5 Harry Walker (Cardinals)- LF Walker was game seven’s player of the game, getting two RBIs along with one run, two hits and a walk in the Cardinals’ 4-3 victory to clinch the series championship. 2. #17 Joe Garagiola (Cardinals)- C Garagiola earned player of the game honors in game four, hitting three RBIs with a run and four hits in the Cardinals’ 12-3 victory. 1. #31 Harry Brecheen (Cardinals)- P Brecheen grabbed player of the game honors in game two, taking a complete game shutout on just four hits and three walks as the Cardinals took the 3-0 win.
