History Sports Sumo
Sumo is one of the traditional sports that has been more than 2000 years old. Sumo sport originated from Japan and has been rooted since the 1500s in the era of the Japanese empire. Formerly Sumo known as Sumai. This tradition is a symbol of heroism and also religious. Precisely in the 16th century, a Japanese ruler named Oda Nobunaga often hosts a sumo tournament. At the time of Oda Nobunaga, Pesumo still wear the lower body cover of a loose rough cloth. In the Edo period, sumo wrestlers competed in wearing a beautiful and dashing mawashi called kesho mawashi. Now, kesho mawashi only worn sumo wrestlers while parading on the dohyō at the beginning of the tournament opening. DOHYŌ Dohyō is an arena of sumo matches, whose sides are 570 cm long, 66 cm high and the diameter of the match circle is 455 cm made above ground. This sumo game has a roof resembling the roof of a Shinto religious shrine called tsuriyane that weighs up to 6 tons. TUR­NA­MEN Within a year there are six major tournaments called Grand Tournaments. The Grand Tournaments are held 3 times in Tokyo in January, May and September and once each in Osaka in March, Nagoya in July and in Fukuoka in November.
