Family members of the women also joined the fight and police were forced to step in several times to keep the peace.

Two women ended up in a hair-pulling fight on the edges of Italy's famous Trevi Fountain after the pair wanted to take a selfie in the same spot.

A 19-year-old woman from the Netherlands and a 44-year-old Italian-American woman were pictured attacking each other next to one of Rome’s most popular tourist spots.

The pair initially argued but the disagreement then descended into violence.

A Facebook post from Rome's police said the women began to jostle, slap and punch each other.

Once they began to fight, their family members also joined in. One of the youngest involved was 13 years old, according to police.

Eight people ended up involved in the brawl as a crowd of surprised onlookers stood by.

Two police officers intervened to try to end the fight, but their truce only lasted a few minutes.

A further two officers had to get involved before the families stopped fighting.
