It seemed that The Notorious One and Cowboy were all set to fight, but we could be further away than we think...
After just listening to The Joe Rogan Experience MMA Show #58 with Brendan Schaub, the two discussed the potential fight between Conor and Donald.
After McGregor and Cerrone seemed to make a verbal agreement to fight, it appeared to be all systems go! However, Joe Rogan mentioned that the UFC wanted to make the two fight in a Co-Main Event, as the biggest UFC main events are always (almost) Title Fights. Conor doesn't like the sound of being a co-main!
Conor and Cowboy can't really fight for an interim title, but, when Conor fought Nate Diaz twice, this was main event on main cards, without a title on the line, and was 2 of the biggest PPVs in the companies history.
I can understand the UFC not being able to put Conor vs Cowboy as a title fight, but, I would say its main event worthy, would you? I don't think any of the fans would be annoyed at this..?
Let's face it, Conor is still the biggest draw, by quite a long shot. It doesn't make sense from the company standpoint to not have him headline an event - he is the star of the show! Like it or not! Plus Cowboy is a huge name too! This fight would have been huge, as would ANY McGregor fight. Hell, I could main event a UFC with Conor and it would do over 1,000,000 PPV buys! I may even last longer than Aldo did.... hehe.
Allegedly Conor wouldn't be happy as a co-main event. I can understand this, but, you gotta do what you gotta do to get back to that title!
So, it looks like this fight is off and Cowboy might be fighting Al Iaquinta. Still a great fight and I think Cowboy takes that, but that is a tough one!
What's next for Conor?
Tony Ferguson! However, this STILL wouldn't be a main event due to the craziness of the LW division!
He won't be able to fight for a main event for a while at lightweight. Unless.... Conor and Tony fight for the 145 title if Max vacates..?
Maybe, Max, win or loose against Dustin, will drop back down to Featherweight and fight Conor for the title. I can't see Conor dropping back to 145, and to be honest I don't know if I can see Max doing it again...
