Yamaha lags far behind Ducati and Honda in the Austrian MotoGP free practice. If there is no improvement on the acceleration of the motorbike, Maverick Vinales can't expect much.
Yamaha's concern that they would have trouble at the Austrian MotoGP came true. Two of their riders were scattered in two free exercises at Red Bull Ring,
In the first free practice, Vinales only occupies the tenth position. The record is 1.005 seconds slower than Andrea Dovizioso who is the fastest rider. Meanwhile, Vinales' teammate, Valentino Rossi, was in 11th position.
Vinales could not sharpen his time in the second free practice because the session took place on a wet track. He only occupies the 20th position, while Rossi is in tenth.
Vinales said the main problem lies in the acceleration and motor power of the M1. In fact, the character of Red Bull Ring is very demanding of these two things.
Vinales hopes to overcome this problem before the race. If not, he might not be able to compete with the leading riders.
"We are still having difficulties with acceleration and on this track we have to deal with it tomorrow. If not, we don't have a chance at all," Vinales said as quoted by Crash.net.
"I don't have any physical problems, which makes me upset because I can go 100%. So, let's see if we can improve in the right way tomorrow," he said.
Vinales currently occupies fourth place in the MotoGP rider with 109 points. He was under Marc Marquez (181), Rossi (132), and Dovizioso (113).
