What's up basketball fans! I am here again @dwin0603 to give you another exciting basketball discussion for another episode of NBA Talk, and today we will talk about the latest news and updates for the 2019 NBA Free Agency! Let's start!
Before the Toronto Raptors won the 2019 NBA Finals after getting Kawhi Leonard from the San Antonio Spurs via trade, the Boston Celtics had the chance to get their hands on Kawhi Leonard back in 2018. The Celtics started the 2018-2019 season with a roster led by Kyrie Irving and a bunch of talented young guys. And while the Spurs are looking to find Leonard a new home, they saw some talents in Boston and offered them a trade centered around Jayson Tatum.
So, the Boston Celtics might be regretting this the most. They could've been the one holding the Larry O'Brien trophy and Kawhi Leonard staying in Boston for a long term contract might be a possibility though had they made a deal for Leonard. It might also convince Kyrie Irving to stay and win another championship together with Leonard.
The Boston Celtics have all the advantages in trading for Kawhi Leonard. They can outbid the Toronto Raptors or any other team that is pursuing Kawhi Leonard. They maybe had high hopes for their young core because of almost beating LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in a seven-game series without Kyrie Irving. And they are also saving them for a possible trade for Anthony Davis.
However, it is all done and the Raptors are the winners. Even though they lost Kawhi Leonard in free agency, he already gave them what all 30 teams are fighting for. And that is the goal. Leonard gave them a championship before leaving and it's a right decision. The Boston Celtics would've been a much better team with Leonard had they gave up some of their young players. It's really just a matter of risk and sometimes you just have to grab it.
