What's up basketball fans! I am here again @dwin0603 to give you another exciting basketball discussion for another episode of NBA Talk, and today we will talk about the reason why the Lakers signed Michael Beasley in the offseason. Let's start!
It has been a rough season for the Lakers as they failed to reach the playoffs even with the arrival of the King LeBron James. Nobody expected this to happen but it's here so they just have to move on, fix the problem and come back strong next season. There are just too many problems with the Lakers this season and they just couldn't handle those problems. But let's talk about their roster construction, NBA analysts believe that their roster construction during the offseason was one of the real reason why they weren't able to succeed.
There was no consistent second option who can step up when James is down. So when James injured his groin, it was a nightmare for the Lakers as they failed to win games without LeBron and Lonzo Ball. JaVale Mcgee was good in the first half of the season but he slowed down and hasn't been very effective like he was at the beginning of the season. Rondo got injured too and others like Stephenson and Beasley are not too relevant. They surrounded LeBron with the wrong pieces and one of them is Michael Beasley.
Now, let me break down to you why the Lakers chose to sign Michael Beasley in the offseason instead of retaining Brook Lopez. We know that Beasley is a good scorer and can contribute off the bench but does he gave the Lakers what they needed? My answer is a big NO! The Lakers have a big problem defensively. Michael obviously couldn't help in that part and offensively, he struggled to provide what the Lakers expect him to give.
The reason why the Lakers chose Beasley over Lopez is that they thought he can play small ball center which can help their fast pace offense and replicate what Julius Randle did for the Lakers. They thought his skillset is enough to fill the void Randle left when they let him walk away. It's a very bad decision, in my opinion, choosing Beasly over Lopez. Lopez can stretch the floor and he's a great shooter. That could've helped the Lakers. And defensively, Lopez is way better than Beasley because of his size.
At the end of the day, they can never bring back the time, They made wrong decisions and it will now only serve as a lesson. They should do better next time so let' s see if the Lakers are gonna bring in better talents that will fit in next offseason.
