Hi. Timofey Mozgov here) As promised, I'm going to tell you all about myself, basketball, NBA and much more here in my Scorum blog. Here's something like an introduction to begin with.
After the NBA season with the Brooklyn Nets I went for a holiday and then flew to Moscow. Nothing special there, only lots of practice time. But Moscow is a magic city that always has tasks for you and so there is barely any spare time. The schedule is tough.
I did not have a chance to watch full games of NBA finals between Golden State and Cleveland. Time zone here in Moscow made watching live too difficult, and I don't like watching games recorded. So for me it was mostly about highlights. I might have watched some decisive games, maybe the 7th, but the series was over too quickly. I did not expect it to be a 4-0 final. My thought was that Cleveland would battle for the title. I supported my former team. Probably less than if I played for it, but still…
I'm very dissatisfied with my NBA season. It was a hard one and really bad. The breaking point came quite unexpectedly. The coach just said: "This is the situation we have". There were no transitional periods, just like this: bang! I had a personal talk to the coach later, but it did not help. Probably the coach had some ideas about me, but he failed to get them through, at least I did not understand anything. The team meeting at the end of the season did not make things clear either. There haven’t been any talks about the next season, so we'll wait and see.
We held the second edition of a basketball tournament for children in Perm over the weekend. The idea of such a tournament arose quite a while ago, some 6-7 years back. Since that time we hold them with my team. This is a lot of work, and I would like to thank everyone involved for all their help and organization. Certainly I try to be there for children, but there is also a huge part of behind-the-scenes operations.
Back in 2013 we agreed that the NBA would officially support our initiative. They reacted positively to the idea. We have been collaborating since then. I believe these young athletes are happy to get closer to the best basketball league in the world.
After Perm we visited Tyumen for a day. A TM20 Cup took place there as well. Unfortunately I did not have a chance to visit the Saint-Petersburg edition of the tournament. So for me there were three tournaments in total in three different cities. My dream (or I'd rather call it a plan) is to hold 5-10 tournaments in different cities every year. Time and some assistance are crucial to making that happen. In Tyumen and Perm we have great partners who help with organization. Those are local guys interested in youth sports development. We hold tournaments in collaboration with them. Unfortunately we don't yet have these helping hands in all the cities, but we will try to get as many cities as possible under our umbrella. 15 cities would be too much for me to be present, but I think the more we do the better is for the children.
There were no famous players at my practices when I was a child. The only thing I can recall is a small court set up for children next to a regular one before a CSKA vs Spartak game in Saint-Petersburg. We were shooting there. When players walked past, we had a chance to touch their hands. Probably that was the only opportunity to meet a professional player during that time.
By the way, my son finally likes to play basketball. He is now able to do more things. Before Aleksey could not shoot hard enough for the ball to reach the basket and his dribbling was not good enough. But now he’s growing bigger, has been practicing a lot recently and does more and more. He's just 6 years old and has everything ahead of him.
I remember my first ever practice at Admiralteyskaya Youth Sports School in Saint-Petersburg. I joined a group that had already been training for some time. I did not know anyone there, a completely new team for me. Grown-ups take it easier, but children are tougher in this respect. There were not enough balls at the practice. The coach said “Steal the ball and then shoot” and walked away. I was standing there and thinking: steal the ball? I could not shoot more or less anyway.
2018 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Moscow on Thursday, but honestly soccer is not my thing. I do not like watching it. I get so many questions about soccer and I always answer I am not interested. Maybe people will think I am negative towards soccer, but really I'm just more about active participation than passive watching. I like doing something, not just sitting in front of a TV-set. I watch basketball not because I enjoy it, but because this is a part of my profession and life. I am never against playing volleyball on a beach, soccer or tennis.
Thank you for reading. I will be happy to see your comments and questions which I'll answer next time. I will tell you whatever you want to know. Well, almost)
