Relax, this will soon make sense.

This scenario only becomes a reality if the Kawhi situation prolongs close to the trade deadline. But if it does take time, a trade could be a great move for Brooklyn and their rebuild.

The San Antonio Spurs will certainly want to resolve the situation as quickly as possible, but if the big name players like the Lakers, Celtics and Sixers remain hesitant in giving up too much for Leonard now, it may take more time than originally planned. In the Lakers case, giving up too much is definitely not in the plan, as they may feel like they can acquire the All-Star next summer in free agency.

Whilst it's been reported that the Nets are currently not in the hunt for Kawhi, here's how it could all work out:

If it gets close to the trade deadline, you can almost guarantee that the big teams will hold off onto summer 2019 for various reasons. The Lakers will be looking towards free agency, and the Sixers and Celtics will know that there won't be enough time to convince Kawhi to stay long term, outside of a championship, and may move on towards other targets.

Enter Brooklyn. Now the deal wouldn't be great, but as this point the Spurs would have to take what they can get. So here's the deal:

Spurs Receive: Spencer Dinwiddie, Allen Crabbe, 2019 1st round pick

Nets Receive: Kawhi Leonard

For the Spurs: Crabbe and Dinwiddie are two talent guards coming off solid seasons. Averaging a combined 25.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 8.2 assists last season, they could provide the Spurs with some solid play off the bench for a Spurs team that would probably now be centered around LaMarcus Aldridge.

Crabbe would bring another shooter to the team, while Dinwiddie's all around ability and play-making would fit well into the Spurs system. More importantly, Dinwiddie is an expiring contract, and Allen Crabbe has an $18.5 million player option for his contract next year, which expires in 2020. If they worked, they could keep them going, if not, there's some flexibility to make moves at the end of the season.

Most importantly however, the Nets don't look like they'll be a great team next year, and their 2019 pick could be a hot commodity, enough to get the deal through. Dinwiddie and Crabbe are not stars, and even at the deadline, the Nets would need to offer something attractive. A top lottery pick could send the Klaw East to the other team in the Big Apple.

For the Nets: Brooklyn is still in rebuild mode, and could potentially have enough cap space for two max players next summer. This deal would make that a certainty, with Crabbe's player option off the books. They would have to give up what could be a top pick in next year's draft. But there's no risk without reward. With news that Kyrie Irving and Jimmy Butler want to play together next year, supposedly for the Knicks, maybe it's the other team in New York that can pull this off.

Here's the kicker: The Nets would not only want Kawhi to leave, they'd expect it, and his departure could potentially leave them with $80 million of cap space!

With enough money for max deals and the New York market, the Nets could be a huge attraction. If they were able to trade D'Angelo Russell for a big man, the Nets could jump to a playoff team very quickly, especially in the East.

This would a huge gamble, as there's no guarantee you'd attract free agents. The Spurs may not even accept the deal. But we need some relevant basketball in New York. It's not the Knicks, but surely NBA fans would take it, right?
