The move that was years in the making: Jordan is finally a Maverick

This time there was no Chris Paul to barricade down the doors and stop Jordan moving back to the Lone-Star State. The 7-foot Center finally got his move to Dallas, which he confirmed in simple yet fitting fashion on Twitter last night:

Whilst we wondered whether Jordan had made a mistake opting out, as a player with his skill-set was no longer worth the same amount of money, the deal suits both parties.

For the Mavericks, they have brought it a top quality defender and elite rebounder who's going to run the floor and add a new element to any pick-and-roll offense coach Rick Carlisle may run. They also provided themselves the ability to go down various avenues in the future. As the deal is only for one year/ $24.1 million, if they feel that Jordan won't work out for their plans after 2019, they can bite the bullet and let him enter free agency again once again. On the other hand, if Jordan and the Mavs are happy with the situation, perhaps they could work out a multi-year deal with yearly totals well below $24 million.

For Jordan, it may not be his hometown of Houston, but he finally gets a move back to Texas. He joins players like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and JJ Redick, signing a one year deal worth more than he can ever expect per year in a multi-year deal. Both parties will be happy that a trade for Jordan wasn't the road taken. In essence, he's instead been traded to the Mavericks for nothing in return and keeps his existing deal.

Now Dallas fans can start to dream. Is a playoff spot now on the cards? With lineup that will seemingly consist of Dennis Smith Jr, Luka Doncic, Wesley Matthews, Harrison Barnes and DeAndre Jordan, will this crew be enough to bring relevant basketball back to Dallas? They have a great coach in Carlisle who has led them to a title before. Give him the right pieces to do his job and good things normally happen. The Mavs are yet to work out a contract for legend Dirk Nowitzki, who agreed to decline his option for next season to work out a new deal, supposedly to give extra cap space to the team. The Mavercks could be a few bench pieces away from being competitive once more.

Nevertheless, it's been a fantastic offseason for a Dallas side that is still building, picking up one of the most exciting prospects of the draft in Doncic to pair with Smith Jr in the backcourt, and securing a high profile Center who can provide some much needing steel to the team that has been absent since Tyson Chandler's departure.

Now the real work can begin, as the Mavericks try to reclaim Texas.
