The Knicks fell at the last second at the Barclay Center on Friday - literally - losing to the Brooklyn Nets by a score of 105-107. But this young, rebuilding team has everything to be proud of, and so do the fans. Here are my Five Takeaways from what was a hell of a game.
Friday Night Basketball to Get Excited About
When you have been goaded by smug Red Sox fans all day (don't ask) this was the kind of exciting Knicks Friday night ball basketball I needed today, and I'm pretty sure most New York sports fans would agree. Sudden death, heart attack basketball. Just the way I like it.
Ennis the Menace
I didn't make that moniker up, the great Walt Clyde Frazier did, but it was certainly apt tonight. Ennis was everywhere tonight, taking charge on both ends in just the way David Fizdale needs - and expects - him to with Porzingis still on the bench in his suit for who knows how much longer. Kanter finished the game with 29 points - tied with Tim Hardaway Jr. for high scorer, but he added 10 rebounds as well.
Hardaway Continues to Shimmy
Fresh off a fantastic performance against the Atlanta Hawks in the season opener Tim Hardaway Jr. continued to deliver against the Nets, scoring 29 even though he was shadowed intensely - and often seriously hampered by - Caris LeVert, the man who struck that final blow - he showed us just what he's made of once again, and it's really good stuff. Extra bonus; Tim Hardaway Sr. cheering his kid on wildly from the stands.
Frank Comes Alive
Frank Ntilikina is a player with a great future. But he's also European, and usually rather reserved, as many of us are. Tonight, however, he came alive. He was, in the words of Walt Clyde' alive and hyperventilating'. His play wasn't perfect but it was exciting and energetic. He remains one of the players I am most excited about on this team.
Fiz is a Delight
David Fizdale is an NBA rookie, at least in coaching terms. He wasn't a hugely popular choice with some fans when he was hired. But he's actually perfect for this young, emerging team. The sight of him dancing - yes dancing - on the sidelines when things were going well - and his passion when they weren't - was a joy to watch. And I'm willing to stick my neck out right now; he's the right coach for this team, the right coach for Knicks and he's going to do great things.
