How do the Blazers Save Their Season?
If the Blazers don't do something soon, their 2019-20 season might be one Blazer fan looks back at and wonders what if. The injuries to the frontcourt are killing the team right now. In my opinion, there has to be a trade made soon if Neil Olshey wants to avoid that. The thing that makes this decision so complicated is the salary cap and the team making it to the Western Conference Finals last season. The Blazer's salary cap is one of the worst if not the worst right now in the NBA. They have the highest salary, $145,648,697, according to basketball-reference, and they have around $97 million already on the books for next season. Here is the question, do the Blazers keep the team as currently constructed and use the cap space they're going to gain from Hassan Whiteside and Kent Baezmore's expiring contracts to make small market type deals in free agency? Be significant players in the trade market like Olshey always seems to be. Move forward with a core of three guards, Nurk, and Zach Collins. Or do they go for the splash trade that helps them plug the holes left by injuries and try to get the salary cap back to something that resembles a small market team? I think its time to trade McCollum, Whiteside, and Bazemore. I'm not going to guess who they'd get because the salary cap situation is so bad, and it would probably take four teams minimum to get a deal done. I know. I know. I know. But it has to be said, and if you think about it and look at the salary cap, the fact that Whiteside and Bazemore's expiring contracts are around 46 million of gold to some NBA team. Portland has the chance to take advantage of Golden State being decimated by injuries, and Kevin Durant being out for the season, Portland has the opportunity to sidestep their own injury problems. It seems like every game we see Anfernee Simons do something on the court, and in your head, locked deep in the very back, in a safeguarded by other Blazer fans you whisper softly do we need C.J. if we have this kid. The cold-blooded truth is Simons makes C.J. expendable. It's a cold world, and as players love to say, this is a business, and right now, Portland is strapped because of the salary cap and injuries. The team needs to use the pieces they have right now to save this season. The Blazers could get in front of the salary cap, and just maybe have a super team in Portland.
