What really makes a good football team, good?

The quarterback? Sure. Running back? Maybe. Is it the wide receiver? Partly. Or perhaps it’s that one person standing along the bench throughout the whole game?

Yes, definitely.

No other sport highlights the crucial role of a coach than college football. The strongest player may charge the team to victory, but it’s the coach that fires the shots. The mind behind the action.

Through eras of exhilarating college football seasons, we’ve witnessed great minds set the field on fire with their awe-inspiring coaching tricks. The NCAA is full of them, but the best college football coaches can only be counted by fingers.

5 Greatest NCAA Football Coaches

Knute Rockne

Career Record: 105-12-5

Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, Knute Rockne honed his superior football skills as a player and coach at the University of Notre Dame. His coaching ability brought home three national championships and five undefeated seasons, adding up to a winning percentage that is considered the highest record in the history of college football so far.

Howard Jones

Career Record: 194-64-21

Along with his brother, Howard Jones was just a regular football player in Ohio who never knew his skills would take him as far the best NCAAF coaches in the books. His leap to the Yale football field started it all, following a trail of excellence into Syracuse, Ohio State, Duke, and finally at USC where he brought seven Pacific Coast Conference championships and two national championships which paved th e way for the university’s major expansion and development.

Nick Saban

Career Record: 235-63-1

The Southern football prodigy landed a series of collegiate and professional assistant roles before becoming a head coach. Nick Saban graced the fields of Michigan State, University of Toledo, and Louisiana State before finally arriving in Alabama State in 2007 where his work spoke for itself. Like waking up a sleeping giant, Saban turned Alabama into a real powerhouse having claimed five total top-division college football championships. His was a coaching career that was built on years of hard labor.

Pop Warner

Career Record: 319-106-31

Risen to football dominion in the early 1900s, Pop Warner was not only an exemplary coach; he was a true luminary who had a real passion for the sport. His excellence is reflected in his innovations that advanced the sport to greater heights. The 3-point stance, body blocking and single and double wing formations that we know now are all invented by him - proof that regarding Warner as one of the best NCAAF coaches ever is unquestionable. Since 1951, his name is deeply engraved in the College Football Hall of Fame.

Bear Bryant

Career Record: 323-85-17

Nick Saban isn’t the only football icon Alabama has produced. Before him, there was the greatness of Paul “Bear” Bryant in the field who tops my list of the best college football coaches of all time. His six-title win record hovers above his successor, Saban, but that’s before college football still wasn’t a big business like it is today. However, we can’t deny his achievements really meant a huge deal in American football, having named National Coach of the Year thrice with his last game marked with a final victory.

In perceiving the results of a football match, knowing the team and the players is just as important as understanding the coach. This is one thing you can’t overlook when you’re betting on college football as the performance of a team can be hinted by who’s coaching them for the season.

These coaches definitely did not disappoint, and will go down in history as the men behind a long-standing football domination.
