Source: aseaofblue.com / Oklahoma got a big W, Minnesota took their first loss of the season, and Alabama lost their QB. Oh yea and Georgia got past Auburn - it was one eventful week in the world of NCAA football.

Welcome back all! Well last weekend provided plenty of fireworks in the NCAA football world as Oklahoma - Baylor provided plenty of fireworks, a CFP contender suffered their first loss, and their were plenty of changes once again at the back end of the rankings. It was an eventful week, with plenty to cover ahead of tomorrow's big games, so let's get right to it.

-

We start at the very top of the rankings, where the LSU Tigers backed up their big victory @ Alabama by heading on the road to take on Ole Miss. They picked up right where they left off and raced out to a 31-7 halftime lead. The second half was a bit troubling, however, as the Tigers were gashed for 30 points after halftime and surrendered over 400 yards rushing to a team that is just 4-6 on the season. It was still a 58-37 victory for the top-ranked Tigers, but they need to shore up some things on the defensive side of the ball. Luckily they have Arkansas at home tomorrow, the Razorbacks don't even know what it feels like to win a SEC game anymore, they are now 0-14 in SEC play over the past two seasons.

-

Behind the Tigers, Ohio State had a cupcake ahead of tomorrow's showdown against Penn State. A 56-21 rout at Rutgers keeps the Buckeyes locked in to that #2 spot. Clemson followed suit and hardly broke a sweat in a 52-3 dismantling of what appeared to be a decent Wake Forest squad. The Tigers are once-again in the ACC Title game, and just have in-state rival South Carolina left to complete another undefeated regular season.

-

Source: oanow.com / Georgia smothered Auburn for most of their showdown Saturday, prevailing 21-14, and picking up another quality win in the process.

Georgia remained at #4 for the time being, relying on a stifling defense & experience to get past a very good Auburn squad on the road, 21-14. The inexperience of FR QB Bo Nix showed down the stretch as the Bulldogs' D made the plays to preserve another big victory for the Dawgs'. Oregon remained at #5 after coasting past Arizona 34-6. The Ducks' have plenty of weapons on the offensive side of the ball, but it's been the defense that has come on strong in the second half of the season. They remain ahead of fellow 1-loss Pac-12 CFP contender, Utah, who completely shutdown Chip Kelly and UCLA's fast-paced offense in a 49-3 rout. The Utes moved up a spot to #7 following the victory.

-

The Alabama Crimson Tide, meanwhile, went to Starkville to face Mississippi State as they looked to rebound from the LSU loss. After racing out to a 35-7, that's when disaster struck. With the game in hand late in the first half, Tua Tagovailoa took the field one more time to lead the Tide in a 2:00 minute drill before halftime. Early in the series he was flushed from the pocket, and took a big hit. A dislocated hip later, and Tagovailoa's season was over and the Tide's chances of making the CFP took a major hit. Bama also suffered several other injuries in a game in which they prevailed 38-7, but obviously was overshadowed by the injury to Tua. The good news is, Tagovailoa had successful surgery on Monday, should make a full recovery, and will be on the sidelines in Tuscaloosa tomorrow. The Tide remain at #6 this week, and will continue to need some outside help if they are to sneak into the final four.

-

In one of the other big showdowns of the week, previously #7 Minnesota hit the road following their massive win over Penn State to take on Iowa at Kinnick Stadium. The hard-fought, physical contest ended in their first defeat of the season, falling 23-19. The loss wasn't a bad one, but was a missed opportunity for the Golden Gophers to add a much-needed quality road victory to their resume. The loss drops them 3 spots to #10 this week.

-

Penn State took on surprising Indiana in a Big TEN East showdown, and the Nittany Lions prevailed, 34-27 to improve to 9-1. The victory moved them up a spot to #8 ahead of tomorrow's big showdown at Ohio State. The Hoosiers dropped to 7-3 in has been a resurgent season for the long-dormant football program.

Source: dallasnews.com / Baylor had Oklahoma's high-powered O completely corralled for a half, taking a commanding 28-3 lead, and 31-10 advantage into the half. A wild 24-0 2nd half rally from the Sooners however, kept their CFP hopes alive.

Rounding out the top 10 are the Oklahoma Sooners, who moved up a pair of spots to #9 following their crazy come-from-behind victory at Baylor Saturday night. The previously unbeaten and 10th-ranked Bears raced out to a quick 28-3 lead on the Sooners, and took a 31-10 advantage into the locker room. Oklahoma came out like gangbusters in the second half, and shutout the Bears while outscoring them 24-0 to rally for an incredible 34-31 victory to keep their CFP hopes alive. The excruciating loss dropped Baylor 5 spots to #15, and left them still looking for that "big" win despite the 9-1 record.

-

Florida, Wisconsin, and Michigan all moved up directly behind Minnesota to #s 11, 12, and 13, respectively. The Gators tamed Missouri 23-6, the Badgers got over a slow start in a 37-21 victory at Nebraska, and Michigan continues to trend in the right direction ahead of their showdown with OSU next week, routing Michigan State 44-10.

-

Notre Dame moved up three spots to #14 after crushing previously #20 Navy, 52-20 in South Bend. The Irish have gotten back on track since their surprising demolition at Michigan a couple of weeks ago. Boise State crushed New Mexico 42-9 to move up two spots and pass Cincinnati as the highest ranked "group of 5" team. The Bearcats are an impressive 9-1 as well, but struggled mightily at South Florida last Saturday. They trailed 10-0 at the half before rallying for a 20-17 victory. The lackluster win drops them one spot this week to #17.

Source: goiowaawesome.com / Iowa finally got their first win over a ranked opponent in their fourth try, taking down previously unbeaten Minnesota 23-19 in the battle of the 'Floyd of Rosedale' (bronze pig).

Memphis, Iowa, and Auburn round out the top 20. The Tigers are now 9-1 and moved up to #18, Iowa was the big mover of the week following their upset of previously unbeaten Minnesota, rising four spots to 19, and Auburn dropped 7 spots after the loss to Georgia, landing at #20 this week. Auburn has three tough losses, but a huge neutral field win over Oregon in the season opener. They will look ahead to the season-ending rivalry showdown with Alabama.

-

SMU was idle and remained at #21, Oklahoma State took care of Kansas 31-13, to move up 3 spots to #22, and Appalachian State jumped back into the rankings this week at #23. The Mountaineers are now 9-1 after pounding Georgia State 56-27. Rounding out the top 25 are the other two newcomers to the rankings this week in #24 Texas A&M - who won their fourth straight to improve to 7-3 - and #25 Air Force. The Falcons are now 8-2 after get past rival Colorado State 38-21 last week.

-

As always, there are a handful of teams just outside of the top 25, led by Iowa State, San Diego State, Indiana, and Virginia Tech. Three teams dropped from the rankings - Texas lost at Iowa State, Kansas State suffered a horrible home-loss to last-place West Virginia, 24-20, causing them to drop out, and previously mentioned Navy. There was a lot to get through, but we did it, without further ado, here is this week's updated College Football Ultimate Top 25:

Looking ahead to tomorrow, the big headliner game is a college football playoff elimination battle in my opinion, between #8 Penn State and #2 Ohio State. The Buckeyes have won this showdown in each of the past two seasons by a single point. It should be a great one from Columbus. Illinois visits #19 Iowa in what should be a good game in the Big TEN West. Iowa is coming off their biggest win of the season, and Illinois is now 6-4 and coming off a bye week. The Hawkeyes should be on upset alert in this one. Boston College visits Notre Dame, Texas looks to bounce-back at #15 Baylor. How will the Bears respond after blowing last week's big lead against Oklahoma? The big one in the SEC features #24 Texas A&M - who will be going for their first win over a top 25 team this season, they are 0-3 to date - visiting #4 Georgia as the Bulldogs look to remain locked into that #4 spot. #13 Michigan is at Indiana in a tricky road game in Big TEN East, Temple is at Cincinnati in the American Athletic, and lastly, TCU invades Norman as Oklahoma looks to follow-up last week's fireworks with another W.
