Yet this season seemed different. After the game against New England, the Jaguars were 2-0 and Bortles had just launched for 376 yards and 4 touchdowns in a convincing victory.

In the rematch of the Conference Championship of the previous year the number 3 had dominated despite Fournette grappling with injuries and the absence of high-level WR. Only a month later Bortles found himself on the bench for Cody Kessler, whose record as a QB holder is a miserable 0-8 (the fact that he played in the Browns does not help).

But Bortles is not just a mediocre QB, it's a third choice to which the contract has just been renewed and now Tom Coughlin may have to find emergency solutions to avoid ruining a season that seemed promising at the beginning of the year.

Continuing with Cody Kessler is certainly a gamble, the former QC of USC has not yet proven to be on the field at the NFL level and not having invested more on a possible replacement at the beginning of the year forces the Jaguars to have to look at the rosters of the other teams.

The most suggestive hypothesis is Derek Carr: Oakland is dismantling the team and if he cuts or trades Carr is not due to guarantee him most of the 125 million contract. Gruden may want to choose his own QB and the Raiders have enough choices on the first lap (five in two years) to take a rookie on which to build a contender.

Other options are Jacobs Brissett of the Colts and Teddy Bridgewater of the Saints, but both may be unavailable due to owners or inclined to injury or with an advanced age. Coughlin may be thinking of reuniting with Eli Manning, but there is no certainty that Eli is a clear improvement over Bortles.

In America some reporters whisper that the best option is Colin Kaepernick: the Jags should not miss any choice and the technical characteristics of the released QB could unlock a little explosive attack. It remains to be seen in what physical conditions it is and if the Jacksonville leadership wants to increase the media exposure on the team at such a delicate time.

No solution presents particular attractiveness or security, it is more likely that you try to increase the weapons available to Bortles and hope that with the return of Fournette the attack returns to support a defense from Super Bowl.
