Chiefs QB sensation Patrick Mahomes made history in a variety of ways on Super Sunday in Miami, FL. He became just the second player - and the first quarterback - in the history of the league to win both a MVP Award & a Super Bowl by the age of 25. Cowboys great RB Emmitt Smith is the only other player in NFL history to do so.
-
Mahomes scored the first touchdown of Super Bowl LIV with just :31 left in the 1st quarter on an option keeper from a yard out to give the Chiefs' their first lead of the game at 7-3. From that point, however, beside a Garoppolo pick that led to a Kansas City field goal that made it 10-3, the 49ers largely dominated the game, taking a 20-10 lead into the 4th quarter.
-
With half of the final period ticked away, Kansas City got the ball back and finally put the pedal to the metal, scoring 3 TDs in the final 6:13 of the game to complete a 31-20 rally.
-
It was Mahomes, who finally hit on a deep chunk-play, when he found an open Tyreek Hill for 44 yards to the 49ers' 21. It was the play that completely changed the game, and jump-started the league's most potent offense. 4 plays later, Mahomes found TE Travis Kelce from a yard out to cut the 49ers' lead to 20-17.
-
After a huge defensive stop, the no-huddle proved too much once again, as Mahomes led a 7-play, 65-yard drive, finding RB Damien Williams for a 5-yard score to give the Chiefs their first lead of the game at 24-20 since they led 10-3 early in the 2nd quarter. With just 2:44 to go KC was back in the lead behind Mahomes' 3rd total TD.
-
After another stop by the defense, thanks to a 4th down sack of 49ers' QB Jimmy Garoppolo, Damien Williams did the rest, running for 4 yards & then bursting free for a 38-yard score to put the game away.
-
In the end, the electrifying Mahomes survived a huge hit on a 1st quarter run, and the extremely rare back-to-back INTs during a second half stretch between the 3rd quarter & early 4th quarter. The second pick came with 11:57 to play after a 12-play drive and could have been a back-breaker. Instead, the Chiefs & their young QB responded in a big way.
-
He finished up the night 26 for 42 through the air for 286 yards, with 2 TDs & 2 INTs. After a series of kneel-downs running out the clock in the final seconds, he finished with another 29 yards rushing and a score on 9 attempts. 315 total yards & 3 total TDs later, and the young Mahomes takes home the Super Bowl LIV MVP, leading the Kansas City Chiefs to an epic come-from-behind win for their first Super Bowl Title in 50 years. One final note on Mahomes' performance - he became just the fifth QB in the Super Bowl era to accumulate 10 TDs in a single postseason.
