There is a new sheriff in town in Kansas City. The Chiefs nation is going wild this preseason as they have seen their new quarterback, Patrick Mahomes II, make some incredible plays. Mahomes steps into the starting role after the Chiefs shipped Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins. He has a rifle for an arm and is one of the bright young starts in the NFL.

The football field was not always going to be the home for Mahomes. He was a three sport athlete growing up and had an arm that was fit for a pitcher. His dad, Pat, was a professional pitcher in the MLB. The apple didn’t fall too far from the tree and Mahomes was fielding offers to pitch in college and was also drafted by the Detroit Tigers. But Mahomes decided that he wanted to go another route and accepted a scholarship to play college football and baseball at Texas Tech. But the football field quickly took precedence over the baseball diamond.

This would be the perfect fit as the Red Raiders had the most aggressive passing offense in all of the country with head coach Kliff Kingsbury running the Air Raid Offense. Kingsbury was himself a star and former QB at Texas Tech. Mahomes would see some good action his freshman year and started the last 3 games of the season. He showed flashes of brilliance including a monster game against the Baylor Bears. He threw for nearly 600 yards and 6 touchdowns. That game put him on the map and caught the eye of several NFL scouts.

Mahomes had a good sophomore year at Texas Tech but struggled in the turnover department. His arm strength was featured week in and week out but his decision making wasn’t the best. Mahomes would throw 36 touchdowns but also had 15 interceptions.

But his third and final year in Lubbock, Texas was BOMBS AWAY! He let it rip and with increased confidence and better decision making, Mahomes put on a SHOW. He would throw for over 5,000 yards while scoring 53 total touchdowns and only throwing 10 interceptions. Mahomes set NCAA Records for yards passing in a game (734) and yards total offense in a game (819).

The golden rocket of an arm had NFL coaches and scouts drooling at the though of drafting him. Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs had one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in Alex Smith that they had great success with but that didn’t stop them from taking Mahomes with the 10th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He would spend most of his rookie season on the bench behind Smith and learning the offense.

Now as the start of the 2018 NFL Season is approaching, Mahomes has been handed the keys to the car and is ready to roll. He has SUPER STAR potential and has some great weapons surrounding him like WR Tyreek Hill and RB Kareem Hunt.

The Chiefs open on the road with two tough games at the L.A. Chargers and at the Pittsburgh Steelers. But then they get the San Francisco 49ers at home. They have a difficult schedule but I think they will end up around the 10-6 mark and give Mahomes his first shot at starting in the NFL Playoffs.

Do you think that he will be a Top 3 Quarterback within the next 3 years? I do.
