On Sunday, January 30th, 1983, the Washington Redskins (now Washington Football Team) defeated the Miami Dolphins 27-17 in Super Bowl XVII to win the 63rd championship in NFL history. It was the third championship for the Washington FT franchise as Redskins running back John Riggins won the Super Bowl MVP Award. The game was held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
Due to a players’ strike after week two, the schedule was shortened to just nine games per team. As a result of the short schedule, the playoffs were expanded to include 16 teams, the most in NFL history.
Redskins kicker Mark Moseley won the 1982 MVP Award with 20 successful field goals out of 21 attempts to become the only special teamer to win MVP honors, while New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor won his second Defensive Player of the Year Award with 7.5 sacks and one interception, which was returned for a 97-yard touchdown.
