On Sunday, January 31st, 1988, the Washington Redskins (now Washington Football Team) defeated the Denver Broncos 42-10 in Super Bowl XXII to win the 68th championship in NFL history. It was the fourth championship for the Washington FT franchise as Redskins quarterback Doug Williams won the Super Bowl MVP Award. The game was held at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego.

The regular season schedule was shortened to 15 games per team after a players’ strike commenced after week two, while the teams utilized replacement players in weeks three through five after taking a week off to prepare the replacement players, before the regular players returned for week six.

Broncos quarterback John Elway won the 1987 MVP Award with 19 passing touchdowns and 3198 passing yards, while Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Reggie White won the 1987 Defensive Player of the Year Award with 21 sacks and four forced fumbles.
