Why Andrew Luck being snubbed from the Pro Bowl is wrong on so many levels
In the midst of an MVP-caliber season, Colts quarterback Andrew Luck was astonishingly snubbed from the AFC Pro Bowl roster. INDIANAPOLIS - The 2018 NFL Pro Bowl rosters were released on Tuesday, and it appears that one of the AFC's best quarterbacks has not been voted onto the AFC's roster. It's Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck. The three quarterbacks that did make the roster were Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, Chargers' Philip Rivers, and Patriots' Tom Brady. While these quarterbacks have made a case in 2018 to be the best of the bunch at their position, I am here to tell you that the fans, players and General Managers of the NFL, all who had a hand in making the Pro Bowl rosters, made a mistake. Luck, after missing all of the 2017 seasons in wake of offseason shoulder surgery, sprung back to like this season. He did not just return to the game as Indianapolis' starting quarterback, but he quickly jumped back into the conversation as being one of the league's best quarterbacks. This season under new head coach Frank Reich, the sixth-year QB through 15 games has completed 67.3 percent of this passes (career high), for 3,951 yards, 34 touchdowns (2nd in the NFL) and 13 interceptions. He also has a QBR of 68.8 (8th in the NFL). According to Pro Football Focus, he is the 3rd best QB in the league, behind Mahomes and Saints quarterback Drew Brees. Now, let's talk about the talent around Luck this season. His best wide receiver is T.Y. Hilton, who is still one of the best wideouts in the league. Besides him, Luck has thrown to receivers Chester Rogers, Zach Pascal, Ryan Grant, and Dontrelle Inman. Ever heard of any of those guys? Probably not. Oh, did I mention that the players that have the 2nd and 3rd most receptions on the team are Eric Ebron, a tight end who was deemed a bust while with the Detroit Lions, and running back Nyheim Hines, who is a former college wide receiver who converted to the running back position when he turned pro? Ebron led all tight ends this season with 12 touchdowns, and Hines was 10th in the league in receptions at the RB position. It's worth mentioning that this all took place within a completely new offensive scheme that was just implemented this offseason. For most QB's, it takes atleast one full season to find a solid rhythm within an offense. For Luck, it took training camp and a few preseason games. Now, don't get me wrong. I am not here to tell you that he is better than all of the AFC's quarterbacks that made the Pro Bowl quarterbacks. But he is definitely better than one of them. Let's put Luck's 2018 numbers side-by-side with the 3rd best QB (statistically) on the AFC Pro Bowl roster: Andrew Luck: Other QB: When comparing the two players, Luck clearly has more touchdowns, a higher completion percentage, and a better QBR. His passing yards are slightly below the other quarterback's, so we can disregard that. The other quarterback also has five fewer interceptions, which is a factor, even though Luck has thrown 10 more touchdowns. Want to guess who the other quarterback is? It's New England's Tom Brady. While most years Brady is deserving of a Pro Bowl nod, this season does not seem very fitting. The only real reason I can see why he would be voted in over Luck is because of his age. Putting up those kinds of numbers at 41-years-old is a feat in itself. But that isn't typically a qualifier when determining Pro Bowl players. Not to mention the fact that Brady most likely won't even go to the Pro Bowl since he hasn't attended one since 2001! Believe me, I get it. These types of events are popularity contests. Luck will most likely end up going anyways because Brady will back out and the AFC will need someone to take his place on the roster. But Luck deserves what is rightfully his, and that is being selected to the Pro Bowl roster without someone having to back out. Do you agree with me? Do you think someone else should have made it over both of those QB's? Comment below and voice your opinions, please! Thanks for reading!
