Shane Doan is a no-doubt face of the Coyotes franchise in last two decades, leader and an iconic player. Today Arizona Coyotes announced his jersey number 19 will be retired on February 24, 2019 before the game against the Winnipeg Jets. He will become the first Coyotes player to have his number retired.
Doan played 21 NHL season, all with the Winnipeg Jets/(Phoenix) Arizona Coyotes franchise. Winnipeg Jets drafted him 7th overall in the first found in the 1995 NHL Draft and the same year he debuted in the NHL. Before joining Jets Doan played for Kamloops Blazers (WHL) with another NHL star Jarome Iginla, who retired on Monday. Now they both are the owners of this team along with Tom Gaglardi, Mark Recchi and Darryl Sydor.
The whole NHL career of Shane Doan was in Jets and Coyotes (after the relocation of the fanchise from Winnipeg to Arizona in 1996). In 1540 NHL games for the one team Doan had 972 points (402 goals + 570 assists) and led Coyotes in scoring seven consecutive seasons from 2003 to 2011. In 2000 Shane was named an alternate captain of the Phoenix Coyotes, and three seasons later, in 2003, he got the "C" letter onto his chest and was the Captain Coyote for the following 13 season until his retirement in 2017. He's the longest serving NHL captain.
Doan never won the Stanley Cup, but he's two times World Champion and World Cup winner with team Canada. He also was the national team captain for the three years (2006-2006). Shane won the King Clancy Trophy and the Mark Messier Leadership Award.
Besides being the iconic captain of Coyotes Doan holds the franchise records in games played (1540), goals (402), assists (570), points (972), power-play goals (128) and game-winning goals (69). To beat these records will be not an easy task.
The 41-year-old Doan will be the first Coyotes franchise player to have his number retired. There are a lot of famous players both of Coyotes and former Jets iducted into the Coyotes Ring of Honor - Keith Tkachuk, Jeremy Roenick, Teppo Numminen, Bobby Hull, Dale Hawerchuk and Thomas Steen, but none of them had his number retired. Shane is very grateful to be the first franchise player to have his number retired. He deserves it, for sure.
