Davidson used 00 as his uniform number during the 1977-78 season as goaltender with the New York Rangers, taking 14 wins during that span. After Martin Biron also used the number during a brief stint with the Buffalo Sabres in 1995-96, the NHL discovered that uniform numbers beginning with 0 triggered a bug in their computerized database, leading to them banning such numbers from being used again.

1- Jacques Plante (Canadiens, Rangers, Maple Leafs)

Plante used the number 1 with the Montreal Canadiens from 1952-63, as he claimed five straight Stanley Cups as a starter with the team from 1956 through 1960. Plante also used 1 with the New York Rangers from 1963 through 1965, then from 1970-73 with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Other strong competition included Turk Broda, who also won five Stanley Cups with the Maple Leafs but only had 24 Staney Cup game wins to Plante’s 26, as well as fellow Canadien Georges Vezina who had four Stanley Cups.

Plante’s number 1 was retired by the Canadiens in 1995.

Chabot picked up best player with jersey number 2 in the 1926-27 season, claiming a record of 22-9-5 with the New York Rangers in his rookie season, before changing to number 1 following that season.
