Davidson used 00 as his uniform number during the 1977-78 season as backup goaltender with the New York Rangers, earning a record of 14-13-4. After Martin Biron also used the number during a brief stint with the Buffalo Sabres in 1995-96, the NHL discovered that uniform numbers beginning with 0 triggered a bug in their computerized database, leading to them banning such numbers from being used again.

Plante also used 1 with the New York Rangers from 1963 through 1965, then from 1970-73 with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
