Davidson used 00 as his uniform number during the 1977-78 season as backup goaltender with the New York Rangers, earning a record of 14-13-4. After Martin Biron also used the number during a brief stint with the Buffalo Sabres in 1995-96, the NHL discovered that uniform numbers beginning with 0 triggered a bug in their computerized database, leading to them banning such numbers from being used again.

Plante used the number 1 with the Montreal Canadiens from 1952-63, as he claimed five straight Stanley Cups as a starter with the team from 1956 through 1960, with an additional Stanley Cup as a backup in 1953. Plante also used 1 with the New York Rangers from 1963 through 1965, then from 1970-73 with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Other strong competition included Turk Broda, who also won five Stanley Cups with the Maple Leafs but only had 24 Staney Cup game wins to Plante’s 26, as well as fellow Canadien Georges Vezina who had four.
