Blackhawks fall in OT to the red-hot Winnipeg Jets
The Jets are GOOD I'm a Blackhawks fan to the core and have been my whole life. But, I'm not delusional and recognize a good team when I see one. The Winnipeg Jets are a good team. They're a big, strong team with plenty of players that can light the lamp with the best of them. The Jets entered the night with a record of 20-9-2 to take on the Blackhawks (10-18-5) in Chicago. On to the game! The game started off early in the Jets favor with a goal from Mark Scheifele as he sniped one up over the glove of Chicago goaltender Corey Crawford. But, with only 17 seconds remaining in the first, the Hawks were able to tie it up. That goal came courtesy of a feed from Duncan Keith to the captain Jonathan Toews, who then banked a shot in off of Winnipeg goaltender Laurent Brossoit. The 2nd period was pretty back and forth for the first 10-12 minutes. The Blackhawks played pretty well showing some good puck control that they have been lacking since the firing of coach Quenneville. At about 13 minutes into the 2nd, Brandon Saad crossed the red line with Jonathan Toews on an odd-man rush. Saad fed Toews a nice pass which the captain buried in the back of the net for his and his team's 2nd goal of the night. 2-1 Chicago. But, that lead doesn't last very long. 2 minutes later, Winnipeg forward and sharp-shooter Patrik Laine ripped a goal past Crawford. Little credited with an assist on that play. Then, less than 30 seconds before the end of the 2nd, Matthew Perreault of the Jets scores another goal. This goal comes at the end of a penalty. Perreault got a breakaway coming out of the penalty box thanks to the good hockey sense of Mark Scheifele looking for him up ice. 3-2 Winnipeg. The 3rd period was pretty uneventful for the most part. Then we hit the final minute and a half when things got exciting! With about a minute and a half left, Chicago pulled goaltended Corey Crawford for a 6th man. The Hawks managed to keep the puck in the Jets zone nearly the whole time. With 7 seconds left, Eric Gustafsson smacked home a goal through a multi-player screen. We're headed to OT! OT OT started and ended quick. We saw a couple times up and down the ice. Then about 2 minutes in, Mark Sheifele was left wide open in front of the net and took full advantage of it by burying a goal and ending the game.
