Oiler's Forward Depth
I've been wondering what the Oilers depth chart will look like next season and thought I'd attempt to take a look at the internal options for next season based solely off points. For players not in the NHL I will be using an NHL equivalency calculator. The calculator isn't perfect but does give a rough estimate on what a players performance will be at the NHL level. For NHL players we will prorate their performance over 82 games. Just to make a fair comparison since the NHLe calculations view players based off a full 82 game season. Without further adieu her we go: Left wing Leon Draisaitl (105) Tyler Benson (37) Joseph Gambardella (37) Joakim Nygard (35) Jujhar Khaira (25) Milan Lucic (21) Tobias Rieder (13) Ostap Safin (11) Nolan Vesey (3) Center Connor McDavid (122) Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (69) Cooper Marody (43) Ryan MacLeod (25) Tyler Vesel (11) Kyle Brodziak (11) Colby Cave (7) Right Wing Sam Gagner (33) Kiril Maksimov (31) Josh Currie (30) Kailer Yamamoto (26) Zach Kassian (21) Ty Rattie (18) Cameron Hebig (17) Jesse Puljujarvi (16) I've put the players who spent the majority of last season with the Oilers in bold. Just basing everything off of predicted points you can see just how lacking the Oilers roster was last season. The right wing is a total disaster and should be a top priority to add to this offseason. It's also interesting to note that if you took the top four players at each position as the Oilers roster for next season, you'd have an over 50% turnover from what the team ended with last season. I generally view our forward prospect pool as being quite weak so the number of players that pushed into the top half of the list was a bit shocking to me. After McDavid, Draisaitl and Nugent-Hopkins, there is a staggering gap back to the next group of players on our list. To make things even worse there are 5 non roster players between Nugent-Hopkins and the next returning NHL player, Sam Gagner with a prorated 33 points. I was expecting to see some new faces in the lineup from the farm system next season but maybe I should start expecting even more. Out of the non roster players listed I think a good number have a shot to make the Oilers roster this fall. I would expect Benson, Gambardella, Nygard, Marody and Currie will all get a serious look but before writing this didn't think it would be realistic for all five to actually make the opening night roster. Possible major changes coming in Oil country? We will just have to wait and see.
