Top 5 Players of the 1984 Stanley Cup Finals
By Zane Miller On Saturday, May 19th, 1984, the Edmonton Oilers defeated the New York Islanders at Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton to win the 71st Stanley Cup Finals four games to one. It was the first Stanley Cup championship for the Oilers franchise, and the first that was won in Alberta. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series. 5. #35 Andy Moog (Oilers)- G Moog picked up the win in games four and five, getting 19 saves on 21 shots in the Oilers’ 6-1 victory in game four, while also getting 23 saves on 25 shots in game five as the Oilers won 5-2. 4. #9 Clark Gillies (Islanders)- F Gillies scored player of the game honors in game two, claiming three goals as the Islanders went on to take the 6-1 win. 3. #11 Mark Messier (Oilers)- F Messier took player of the game in game three, as he scored a pair of goals as the Oilers went on to win it 7-2. 2. #31 Grant Fuhr (Oilers)- G Fuhr earned player of the game in game one, making 34 saves on 34 shots to get a shutout in the Oilers’ 1-0 victory to start off the series. 1. #99 Wayne Gretzky (Oilers)- F Gretzky grabbed player of the game honors in games four and five, as game four saw him get a pair of goals as the Oilers won 7-2, followed in game five with two goals and an assist to help the Oilers to a 5-2 win to claim the series championship.
