Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor suffered an ankle sprain during Sunday's win against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to head coach Shane Steichen.

Uncertainty Surrounds Status for Week 5

While Taylor's availability for the upcoming week remains unclear, the Colts are optimistic he won't require a stint on injured reserve. This differs from the approach taken with defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, who landed on injured reserve after suffering a high ankle sprain earlier this season.

Steichen has verified that he is dealing with an ankle sprain at the moment.

History of High Ankle Sprains

Taylor is no stranger to these types of injuries. A significant high ankle sprain in 2022 forced him to miss several games and ultimately required surgery that impacted his availability early in the 2023 season.

Early Signs Indicate Less Severity

Initial reports suggest this injury might be less serious than the previous one. Taylor attempted to return to the game after having his ankle retaped, but the team ultimately opted to hold him out as a precaution.

"You get retaped, and you try everything you can do, but we've got two other great (backs)," Taylor said, referencing teammates Trey Sermon and Phillip Lindsay III."You all are aware of what Trey and Goody accomplished in Pittsburgh last year, so there's no uncertainty about it."

Optimism for Recovery, But No Timetable Set

Despite the uncertainty, Taylor expressed optimism about his recovery, stating he's "1,000 percent confident" he'll be back at full strength. However, he did not provide a specific timeline for his return.

"We'll see how the week progresses," Steichen said. "We'll see how it goes."
