At the end of the 19th century, Andrian Stoop carried out the first oil drilling in the Panolan (Cepu) area. After drilling it was discovered that there was a large amount of high-quality crude oil in the area.

The photo above shows Stoop's first drilling site which was the pioneer for oil drilling in Cepu which continues to this day.

Oil, along with other commodities such as sugar, coffee, tobacco, palm oil and tea, has long been a prima donna for exports from the Dutch East Indies region.

This extractive economic structure lasted long enough for Indonesia to finally break away from dependence on oil. Today, the role of oil is becoming less and less important for the Indonesian economy as well as the state budget.
