Many a times we find ourselves in a situation where a lot of friends have gathered together but, got nothing to play due to lack of sports gears/equipment, bad weather conditions or space limitations. In all these scenarios we end up with regular couch games such as guess the movie/song/personality etc. In addition, when we step into professional work or family life, it gets harder to compose a team which would be enthusiastic to play a full day energy-draining sports like soccer, cricket or baseball.

I realized that you would find me talking about such situations very often because, i am more of an activity-oriented person and in almost every next occasion i seek for a challenge and a minimum amount of adrenaline exploring my veins. For all like-minded, activity lovers out here, i would try to introduce these sports/games we can play with minimum gear requirements. Also, we may get a chance to expand our list of activities and share some unknown ones from different ends of the world. So,

  1. Finger Soccer (Self-invented)

It was more of a table penalty shoot actually, which was brought-up by us (being a part of the staff members) a couple of years back while organizing a soccer tournament among the university clubs. The plan was to place some stalls around the soccer ground but, the space was limited and we also had to comply with the nature of the tournament. So, we came up with this idea which later on became a choice of game for many fellows especially, in bar activities. The game plan is simple:

Arrangement:

  • We arranged two tables in a row and marked both ends of the tables with a sticking tape while leaving some space at both corners which would act as goal posts.
  • Bottle caps were utilized for the shootout and were placed at two designated places on each side.

Rules:

  • It can be played in single and team mode.
  • Each player of the team comes up and get two chances to kick the bottle cap with his fingers, which should cover the full length of tables and cross the goal line.
  • But, caps should not just cross the goal line but also should stay on the table after the goal line is crossed (fall off is no points).

Improvisation:

  • It is possible to improvise. For example for harder modes players have to spin around their axis 5 times and make a shoot within 10 secs.
  • Tables can be replaced with floor and caps can be of any sort (bottles, cans etc)

 2. Gilli Danda:

I think i do not need to introduce this one in details to the readers from Asian or African origin because, many of them have played or heard about the sport. And, after this sentence fellows from the remaining portions of the map would get an idea. It is actually a simplified form of baseball and cricket, but in this case you neither need a ball or a well formed bat. Only that we may better find a little open ground to play this one to avoid any immediate contact of wooden stick or get our windows smashed.

Video is available here, if i fail to explain the Game-play properly (Image Source)

Rules:

  • Two sticks (wooden pieces) of different sizes. One much longer than the other.
  • Smaller wooden stick (Gilli) can be inclined on a small wedge or uneven surface in the form of a see-saw can also work.
  • Longer stick (Danda) is used to hit the open end of the gilli in such a way that it would make gilli fly in the air.
  • During the gilli's flight, the striker strikes the gilli as far as he/she can (told you simplified version of baseball and cricket).
  • The opponent players can catch it in the air and out the stricker. If he could not and the gilli dropped, he can get another chance. In this one, the striker would put the danda either in the standing position or on the floor and the opponent player who grabbed the gilli would try to hit the danda from the position where he picked the gilli. It gets a little harder so that is why striker tries to hit it far.
  • Three missed strikes on the gilli and striker is out. For every successful survival of striker, team gets a point.

 3. Jegi Chagi:

It looks very simple and similar to hacky-sacks but, trust me you need to get an optimum balance and speed in order to grab this flying bird. It is a Korean traditional game and is a very good practice to do it at least 5 minutes a day to get your body warmed up and your muscles running. The game/sports can be played in many formats:

  • Individual mode: Simply kick the shuttle up in the air and don't let it drop. Consecutive kicks would be your points.
  • Team game: Can be played together, pass the flying shuttle to your team-mate who would either pass it on to another one or give you back. Anyhow, keep it in air ;)
  • Advanced mode: Try kicking it in the air while grabbing arms of the player next to you and circle around while dancing on a music. Loved this one.

PS: If you do not find this specific shuttle, it can be easily made by piling 3-4 coins, compressed pieces of cloth or a rubber ball in a paper or shopping bag and can be wrapped or clamped with a ribbon as shown in the right pictures.

                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I understand there is a huge list of such sports and games and i probably could not cover all of them. But, i tried to enlist the ones that can bring diversity and are mostly unknown.

Which one of them are you going to try?
