Learning about events and events that occurred in the past allows us to learn from the mistakes that others made to try to repeat their history, however, we are condemned to see how history repeats itself thanks to those who did not learn about the past.

Scorum has allowed me to be interested in learning about events that have marked the history of sports, especially today I spent the whole afternoon after waking up, to see documentaries about what happened in Munich in 1972.

                                  What exactly happened?

Well, we can describe that on September 5 and 6, we could see that the tactical development and the decisions of the defenders of justice in Germany, allowed a situation that could have been controlled, but it ends with 17 people died and 3 in prison.

The 1972 Olympic Games were to be held in Munich, Germany. After 36 years, since the last Olympic Games where Adolf Hitler was present.

As always, the best athletes and sports stars came from all over the world to attend this event to represent their country with fervor and pride, in the different categories such as athletics, badminton, basketball and some 30 other types of Olympic Sports. But there was a country that I found quite interesting because of its past with Germany, 9 athletes and 2 coaches from Israel came to step on German lands to participate in the Olympic Games, leaving aside what happened to the siege against the Jews and showing a gesture of reconciliation between countries.

But everything went in the worst possible way, that same night before the games began, a group of armed terrorists stormed the Olympic village where the athletes were resting. The coaches realized what was coming and tried to confront the gunmen but it was in vain, both died because of the bullets. In a complete chaos of violence and shouting, 9 athletes were tied up and gagged by terrorists.

Hours later, a local policeman observed the lifeless body of one of the trainers thrown on a sidewalk and immediately alerted the others by radio, noting that through the windows one could see masked and armed men. the police, who was a man with a reputation for being tough and who did not break up in such situations, was put in charge of dealing with the terrorists who had kidnapped the Israeli athletes.ospurce

It did not take long before thousands of cameras and television media showed up to record everything that was happening and what was going to happen in the next few hours.

The hours passed as days, and the first type of contact made by the terrorists was by means of letters thrown by the windows of the building.

They claimed they were part of the "Black September" group and demanded that the government of Israel free 242 Palestinian prisoners, giving the German justice a 3-hour time to contact Israel. Clearly, it was a short time, but the terrorists insisted that they would kill 2 hostages if they did not do what they wanted.

The prime minister was talking to the German police chief, but after meeting with the Israeli government parliamentary they decided that they would not obey any orders from the terrorists and they were not going to let any Palestinian prisoner get out of prison.

The only option left on the table was to regain the hostages by force. But the police chief knew he had to lie to the terrorists to give them more time, he met with the terrorist chief and told him that Israel was going to cooperate, so they extended the time and prevented them from killing the terrorists. hostages Before initiating any action to neutralize the kidnappers, they had to know how many of them they had because it was a crucial piece of information.

They managed to get 2 representatives of the Olympic Games to check the status of the hostages and one of them had the mission to tell the terrorists. Everything went well and managed to count 5 terrorists in total, so the first plan started.

A team of armed policemen was sent to the roof of the building, hoping to enter through the air ducts and kill the terrorists. However, apparently the terrorists already knew what was happening and began to move towards the roof, the police were ordered to abort the operation.

The terrorists, realizing that they were in a totally unfavorable situation and knowing that they were not going to get Israel to listen to them, asked for 2 helicopters with pilots to transport the hostages to Cairo-Egypt. The police chief had to accept the demands of the terrorists, to get them out of the Olympic village. ending in agreement in which they were going to take the terrorists via sub-terrane by means of a bus and then transported in helicopters to the aerodrome where a commercial plane was waiting for them to go to Egypt. Or at least that's what the terrorists thought.

The plan was to set a trap at the airport, placing armed police officers inside the plane as crew members, given that they had agreed that the terrorist chief and his second lieutenant were going to check the plane before entering with the hostages. In addition to putting 5 snipers in different positions surrounding the landing area of the helicopters to finish with the remaining terrorists.

The Helicopteros landed, a bullet was heard before a shootout that lasted more than 1 hour and ended with 2 large explosions and 14 deaths in that time.

Why did it end like this? What went wrong?

From the beginning of history, this tragedy was a cluster of bad decisions and totally unfavorable coincidences. Believe it or not, the Olympic Village where the athletes were, was plagued by security personnel, however, a law that had been imposed to make Germany more friendly would prevent them from carrying weapons and some of them had to be dressed of civilians.

Another big mistake was not having cleared the area of the building of people and the media, the terrorists had access to national television thanks to the televisions in the rooms so they could know everything the police were up to, failing the plan of the roof before it will begin. In addition to another surprise, the group of armed police who were going to enter the roof, literally blind, were ordinary policemen, those who always patrol the streets, they did not have any experience with situations like that.

Continuing with the plan of the trap at the airport, But this plan was the worst thing they could have planned, maybe it worked on paper but when executing everything that could have gone wrong, it happened.

Beginning with the big blunder on the part of the officers inside the plane, minutes before the terrorists arrived, they started discussing the possibilities that they could shoot the terrorist chief, they started to make a democratic vote and they finished abandoning the mission. So all the responsibility ended up falling on the shoulders of the snipers.

The pilots of the helicopters had the order to land in such a way that they could offer a complete field of vision to the snipers to end the life of the terrorists and rescue the athletes. Unfortunately, they landed on the opposite side, cutting off much of the sight of the snipers.

The German army was forbidden by law to provide its services to resolve civil conflicts, so who were the snipers? Agents without much experience and who were in big trouble.

One of the snipers was targeting the terrorist chief, but the shot failed and the bullet ended up in the second lieutenant's thigh. He shot and started, with another big surprise, there were 8 terrorists, not 5.

Everything they had planned was based on the data provided by the ambassador of the Olympic Games, a simple calculation error favored the terrorists.

Armed with AK-47 and many loaders, the terrorists were better armed than the snipers, so they had to stop the fire and wait for more reinforcements, which arrived quickly in armored trucks. Completely submerged in panic, the terrorists continued firing and several of them were killed. One of the terrorists shot the 4 hostages of the first helicopter and then threw a hand grenade, causing a big explosion, also another terrorist did the same with the other plane, killing all the hostages.

In the end, the only ones left were 3 terrorists who were captured and brought before the law. The bodies of the athletes were returned to their families and controversially the Olympic games continued to take place one day after what happened.

Undoubtedly it was a fact that many people can not forget, a sign that the police could have done things better but they did not, that cost the lives of 11 athletes and a police officer who died in the shooting, also destroyed life the families of Jewish athletes.

Terrorism will continue to exist, in addition to the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel, a conflict that does not diminish over the years.

I am totally late in the daily curation posts, the one corresponding to today was written but unfortunately my PC suddenly went out and I lost it.
