I don't care how big your television is, there's nothing like being where the action is taking place. Ever since getting my first job over 15 years ago, I've made it my mission to attend as many sporting events as possible, and I've seen some amazing things both on and off the field. From last-second comebacks to watching my friends get kicked out of the stadium, I have some stories to tell.
For the next ten days, I'll be detailing the ten greatest sporting events I've ever attended. Thanks to fellow Scorum writer @kennybll, I decided to turn what would've been a single post into an entire series. I'll share my full experience, details from each event, and the reasons why it made my list.
The first full post is out, read it here: #10. 2006 NHL Playoffs Edmonton vs Detroit Game 1
Not every game in my top ten were unbelievable games or high profile events, but they meant something to me, and I have a feeling you'll find them interesting as well.
I welcome you to join me on this adventure to my past and read about each of these experiences, and I also invite you to share your favorite sporting events too.
I decided to pick just ten out of hundreds of events. There were several that were just on the border of making it in, so I thought I'd quickly share the honorable mentions with you here before we get into my top ten starting tomorrow.
Honorable Mentions
- Michigan State vs. Wisconsin (Basketball) 2/20/2007
Everyone loves to witness an upset. My unranked Michigan State Spartans were able to defeat the #1 Wisconsin Badgers 64-55 in East Lansing. I was not expecting this victory, which made it so sweet to watch in person.
- Houston Rockets vs. Indiana Pacers, Houston, Texas (3/8/2006)
On a spring break trip to Houston, I was able to catch a great game of NBA basketball between the Houston Rockets and Indiana Pacers. As you may be able to see on the ticket stub above, I was able to acquire an autograph from none other than Patrick Ewing, who was an assistant coach at the time for Houston.
The massive center Yao Ming scored 38 points and had 10 rebounds as he led the Rockets' comeback victory over the Pacers 103-99.
- 2006 NCAA (Basketball) Tournament Second Round, Detroit, Michigan
Traveling with my friend and roommate while living in Kalamazoo, we made the trip to Detroit to watch the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament. This was my first ever NCAA Tournament of many. We were able to see the #13 seed Bradley Braves (a school I would actually attend two years later) upset the #5 seed Pittsburgh to make the Sweet 16. We also witnessed West Virginia move on in the tournament, and as a Kevin Pittsnogle fan (yes, that is me yelling in the video), I was pleased.
- TCU vs. BYU (Football), October 28, 2011
The experience was better than the actual game, which still wasn't bad as the TCU Horned Frogs defeated the BYU Cougars 38-28. I was in Dallas for work and the nonprofit I helped manage was involved in the half-time show. AT&T Stadium is the most impressive stadium I've ever been to, complete with several jail cells under where the field is. I even got to walk right past owner Jerry Jones.
Stay tuned for #10 on my list of the 10 greatest sporting events I've ever attended, which I plan on publishing tomorrow. Thank you so much for stopping by and for supporting my journey here on Scorum.
