It's the beginning of 2020 and we're all simultaneously feeling as it the last year has flown by, and like last New Year was such a long time ago. And on January 1st we all woke up with the very best of intentions and an iron will.

For many of us, of course, such stern determination usually turns into gluttony and laziness before the day is out, meaning that all our fancy resolutions go frankly unheard and unfulfilled.

It is a hard message to take, but most of us just aren't passionate enough to make our intentions transform into reality. I know that I personally have spent a number of years glibly resolving to "become a better person".

Sure no one can measure it, but if I don't hate myself by the time the year is out then I can happily pretend that I kept to my aims!

New Years resolutions aside, this is a time of change and new beginnings. The human race loves nothing more than a good symbolic renewal - I am sure we could take this back to past times and ceremonies, something to break up the dark of winter and convince us to change our lives and better ourselves.

You may well think this is boring and clichéd - but if you are one of those people who loves the idea of cleaning up and repairing your life in the first month of the year then here are some vital ingredients for a happy healthy home!

Polyfilla

Yup, if you are going to patch things up then this branded filler is definitely going to be top of the symbolic list of change! As well as taking the time around new year to actually do those DIY jobs that have been mocking you, this is the best time to get off your ass and fix the holes in relationships and to patch up anything where cracks are starting to appear.

Don't cover it up - pull your finger out and make the effort to actually fix it or choose to leave it behind in another life.

Smoothie Maker

We all know that this kitchen implement will most likely never get used. Or, alternatively, proud new owners will go on a smoothie rampage, blitzing any fruit or veg that dares to stand in their way, and boasting proudly about clearer skin and increased energy as they do so.

Whether you use it or not, this is one of the things that has the potential to make you feel better about yourself - and actually happier. Now, drink that wheat grass juice down and jump on the treadmill!

Foot Spa

OK, everyone is aware that a foot spa, generally a leftover Christmas present, will always end up on the car boot pile or own at the local charity shop. But the idea is a sound one, and if New Year for you is all about emotional development than looking after number 1 simply has to be part of the plan. A foot spa may be a huge waste of money, but having some time out to rest and recuperate is a great idea, especially if it involves bubbly both soapy and drinkable whilst in a deep hot bath!

So if you do decide to makes some resolutions, why not try to keep them. I don't mean go wild and try to change yourself in half a day, but simply make little changes to make you and your home as happy as possible. Or, alternatively, carry on as your always have - I'm sure the world won't end because of it!
