Discovering Poker

A few years ago, when I was still a teenager and studying in high school, I discovered a different card game for me. Although he had seen poker play in Western movies, they always ended up shooting and accusing cheating. With time I understood that many times the accusations were the impotence in the face of the brilliant game.

I started playing classic poker with family and friends, most of the time I lost because of youthful innocence but it seemed like an exciting game and I wanted to progress.

I read books and magazines about strategies, modalities, their great myths. I spent my free time self-absorbed and practicing with my brother or alone.

Texas Holdem BOOM

At the beginning of S XXI Internet reached all households in the world, the digital age had arrived and the game of poker became popular around the world, especially the modality of Texas Hold'm. It was more dynamic, attractive, striking, popular and above all more tactical.

There was a time that became addictive for me. I did not have much money so I always looked for free tournaments in which to learn and earn my first coins or tickets to tournaments with medium / low prizes. Patience was my main asset, I was not in a hurry and had a very clear goal, to be a good player.

Play for a $ 1 Million Pot

I remember it as if it were yesterday ... I managed to qualify after more than ten qualifying tournaments that gave a few tickets for the big event of the year in a well-known poker website. Do not miss the opportunity and I got my big dream. The value of the ticket exceeded $ 1000. I felt really good and prepared to enjoy in a competition where the best players would be playing with me.

The tournament began in the early morning Spanish, I had rested well and I was eager to face the more than 700 rivals that would have opposite. My first hands were speculative, watching the rivals and playing only strong hands, so I got some peace and position myself very well at my table. I had more than 9,000 chips, the third on my table and on the 70th place in the general standings.

The game was going on, I had taken a break to clear, I returned when the blinds were 75/150. The players were falling, the winning positions were approaching but the road was really long and hard. My tactics remained the same although I decided to steal some blind to keep my chips and I was going out of my way. After more than 3 hours of play I had already achieved my first goal, I was charging, we only had 200 poker players left.

A little later I found myself before the most bitter hand of my life. The blinds were 300/600, my position was the penultimate and my cards 7H JH and I decided CALL. I had 7000 chips left and my only opponent of that fateful hand surpassed me with 13000. I did not expect much from that hand but after the Flop my expectations changed AD 6H 8H, I had a project of flush before me, my heart accelerated, I decided to take the initiative of the hand and I bet 2b, this was seen by my rival in the River appeared JD, it was not expected by me, but at least I managed to keep a solid hand, pair of J and flush project. I went back to bet 2b, and I called. Finally the turn appeared a 4 of Hearts, I closed my fist and calm my nerves with a deep breath. The flush project became a reality 😎. I decided to raise my bet to 4b, my surprise was that he answered all in, without thinking Call ... but perplexed I saw how my chips were going to his pile 😥, he showed AH 2H. A few small tears came out of my eyes, I turned off the PC and went to sleep, but rather to think about that damn hand.

After a long time I still think that my hand was well played and if I was in the same situation I would do it again, what I have learned is to handle situations better and maybe I would have taken longer to press the Call button. But life goes on and at least I got my first important prize, it was $ 250 that I invested in a delicious dinner with my current wife and mother of my two beautifuls children. So I'll apply the saying "Lucky in love, unlucky in the game".
