The 49th annual World Series of Poker Main event is officially underway. The $10,000 buy in event garnered 7,874 entries this year, the most since 2006 when a record 8,773 players came out to play in the event. The winner will collect a cool $8.8 million dollars, the coveted main event championship bracelet, and the title “World Champion of Poker”. The runner up will take home $5 million. All 9 players who meet at the final table will earn over a million dollars.

The final table structure has changed a few times over the last decade. Starting in 2008 instead of playing the tournament all the way down to an eventual winner, they would play until the final 9. Those 9 would then return in November to finish the tournament and they were dubbed “The November 9”. In 2017 they did away with this structure and returned to the traditional rule of playing all the way down to a single winner without interruption.

So far they have played out three day 1 flights and are currently on day 2AB, which combines the players left from day 1A and day 1B. As of the start of play today there were still 5,940 players remaining in contention for the win.
