Austin Gilgronis win 'MLR 2020: Virtual' championship
By Zane Miller The Austin Gilgronis won the MLR 2020: Virtual Cup championship on Saturday, while the Seattle Seawolves claimed the secondary championship, the "Plate", and the Houston SaberCats took the "Bowl", which is the tertiary championship. The Gilgronis tied the Colorado Raptors in the Cup title match 7-7, however, the championship went to Austin due to them having a better regular season win-loss record. The Seawolves defeated the Utah Warriors 17-0 to win the Plate, and the SaberCats beat the San Diego Legion 5-0 to take home the Bowl. The SaberCats were represented by back Tiaan Loots, while the Legion were represented by forward Pete Malcolm. The game began with both teams locked in a 0-0 tie at halftime, which continued into the second half. However, the SaberCats claimed the lead and the win with the game-winning try as time expired, giving them the 5-0 victory. The Seawolves were represented by forward Brad Tucker, while the Warriors were represented by forward Alex Tucci. Seattle took a 10-0 lead going into halftime, and continued to pull away in the second half while maintaining the shutout. The Seawolves went on to win 17-0. The Gilgronis were represented by back Will Magie, while the Raptors were represented by back Mika Kruse. It was another tight game as Austin had a 7-0 advantage at halftime, but it would not last long as the Raptors tied it up in the second half. Neither side scored for the rest of the game as it ended in a 7-7 draw, but it would be enough for the Gilgronis to take the Cup on the tiebreaker, as they finished the regular season at 4-1, while the Raptors had a 3-2 record.
