Here's the course, with the last leg taking me deep into the low mountains/forest and emerging at a local hot spring!

As I've mentioned previously, I like to make my long runs during the training process interesting--like little explorations.

The first such run I seriously undertook was a 20-mile journey down the coast of the Sea of Japan, ending at the famous Yahiko Shrine in Niigata. This time, since I'm living in a new locale, I want to explore some different territory. I've been over the whole course now in part on foot, and in part by car, but am looking forward to putting it all together and taking in the beautiful scenery that exists this time of year in Akiha. Akiha, happily enough, means "Autumn Leaves" in Japanese. Perfect, yeah?

So where will this little 12-mile run end? At the hot springs, of course! :) This time, I'll be popping out from the forest to take a hot soak at the Gomado Yuttarikan.

The image to the left is the main bath at the Gomado Yuttarikan. Mount Yahiko and Mount Kakuda are visible in the distance, marking the beginning of the Sea of Japan. There is also an outdoor bath here, which is small, but nice.

After the run, I think I'll enjoy a soak in the hot, sulfurous waters, an ice cold beer, and a little nap on the tatami mats in large lounge. That's the plan for now, at least!

So, when am I gonna run this thing, the first long run in the Shizuoka Marathon training adventure?

Good question. I was hoping to run it together with a friend here in Niigata, but it looks like that might be tough, schedule-wise. I also want to run the course relatively soon, before the autumn leaves have all fallen, and the scenery changes. With all that in mind, though unexpected and unplanned, I may just run it solo, tomorrow! We'll see.

My goal is to stay under 10:30/mile the whole distance. I'll be sure to let you know how it goes!

What about you? Have you ever designed your own little "race" like this, which includes scenery, stops, and locations inspirational to you as a runner? Let me know in the comments!
