Arguably, the most mentally challenging, sport out there, the game of tennis is definitely not for the weak, it requires a great deal of mental strength to get past an opponent on the court, and even when the odds are against you, you sure as hell, can still come out top

We've seen it all, from the nerve wracking games, to the seemingly endless ones, and of course the brilliant ones, the dominant victories and the frustrating ones, but let's not also forget the unexpected ones, even when you feel you've had enough of a shocker, there's always one big one waiting in the top drawer for you, and like that isn't enough, some just really have no scruples in causing an upset against your favorite champions, some have even made a habit of it, there's always more than enough adrenaline, to keep you at the edge of your seat in a tennis match, don't we all just love the thrills of this beautiful court game

The grand slam is no doubt, the biggest competition in tennis, and is most times won by the biggest stars out there, but on some occasions, we've seen the titles, won by an unexpected player, without further ado, here are the 5 most unexpected grand slam champions in modern day tennis history

Serena Williams vs Naomi Osaka

Us open 2018

Arguably one of the most, controversial tennis court games of the modern era, unfancied Naomi Osaka had already made history, by becoming the first Japanese player, to feature in a grand slam final, and the youngstar certainly wasn't resting on her laurels here, even though, she was facing, her idol and one of the greatest tennis player's of all time, Serena Williams, the American was in the hunt, for her 24th grand slam title, she was on the verge of surpassing, legend Steffi Graf's record, of 23 wins , but this was definitely an acid test in the waiting, except that, she probably didn't know that

In a game that was marred by a controversial officiating from umpire Carlos ramos, Naomi Osaka held her own, and went on to become the first Japanese grand slam champion, beating Serena, 6-2,6-4, to take home the crown, on the grandest of all stages, the 20 year old, made a somewhat shocking reaction to her victory, teary eyed and emotional, she said " I feel like, I have to apologize, I know you guys were rooting for her, I'm sorry it had to end this way" such was the magnitude of her shocking victory.

Marin cilic vs kei nishikori

Us open 2014

It was quite an inspiring story, the way and manner in which it unfolded, in 2013, Marin cilic's tennis career was on the brink of collapsing after, being banned for drugs, but a resurgent 2014, saw him become the first Croatian player to appear in a grand slam final, since 2001, his opponent kei nishikori was the first Asian born man, to appear in a grand slam final, the Japanese played through the tournament, with a cyst in his knee

In what was dubbed as one of the most underdog us open finals, with both players, having seen off, pre tournament favourites, roger federer and Novak djokovic, in the semis, respectively, this was a game either could win

Marin cilic came out top, at the end of the contest, after seeing off nishikori, 6-3,6-3,6-3 to etch his name into history books

Stanislas wawrinka vs Rafael nadal

Australian open, 2014

Rafael nadal, went into the Australian open final, being ranked number 1 in the world, and he was up against, a less fancied, swiss, Stanislas wawrinka, though ranked number 8th in the world, so basically it was the Spaniards, title to loose, cos the odds were firmly against wawrinka

But the swiss, defied all odds, to win his first major title, 6-3, 6-2,3-6,6-3, it wasn't the best of performances for Rafael nadal, who had to contend with a back injury, for much of the game, but nevertheless , Stanislas wawrinka was a deserving winner

Serena Williams vs Garbine muguruza

Roland garros, 2016

It was beautifully scripted, for garbine muguruza to say the least, this was her story

In 2015, then 21 year old Spaniard, garbine muguruza, was beaten in her first ever grand slam final, by queen of the court, Serena Williams, but she gained a word of encouragement, however from the multiple time grand slam champion, one that more than just served her, the next time they would meet, and that was indeed in the 2016 French open finals, the 23 year old, held her own to cause a major upset, to the 21 time grand slam champion, who was looking to equal Steffi Graf's record of 22 grand slam titles, but the Spaniard was to be no pushover against the firebrand American

Andy Murray vs Novak djokovic

Us open 2012

It was 76 long years, since a British man last triumphed, at a grand slam final, and with the very promising Andy Murray, this was yet another chance, to end the jinx, but for all that promise, he was up against, nemesis Novak djokovic, a player, who had more often than not, got the better of him, hopes, were high, but so were the stakes on him to once, again fall short, at the 2012 us open finals, the pressure was high on him, and it was always going to take something special to beat, the world number 1

A beautiful and hard fought, game ensued that day, but Andy Murray finally came out top, bringing smiles to the face of British folks, defeating his rival, in three sets to win
