Hi, kon-nichi-wa!
We have a popular board game similar to chess called shogi in Japan. For shogi, professional organization is established and tournaments sponsored by private companies taken place constantly. I think it is uncommon that pro board gamers have such a high social position and stable lives.
As similar to western chess or 'go', the computer shogi rapidly strengthened from the 2010s and became equal level to human professionals around 2015. The human vs computer matches promoted by media was taken place several times and many people keenly watched on. The live streaming that a human and a robot face against shogi plate and fight equally was shocking. Some of shogi fans began to doubt the existence of professionals, as well as the shogi itself. Finally, destiny day has come. The computer defeated the 'mei-jin', champion of the professionals, completely.
How do you think about the shogi popularity became after that?

Today, shogi popularity have increased more. Media became to focus more on players human nature rather than competition results and it grasped the fans' hearts. Yes, through the human vs computer battle, we realized what we truly have been impressed was the humanity of pro players sincerely tackling shogi.
I think this is the same for sports. There are various moving stories around peoples who love sports heartfully.
