Having been opportune to be at the WEST AFRICA UNIVERSITY GAME 2018, as the Sport Director representing my school (LADOKE AKINTOLA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY NIGERIA), I got to know that WAUG games is not just like the common competition but a competition that exposes students to network and connect within and outside the country. It also brings unity among participants and by the way a memorable game for the features that shall be stated.

WAUG game is an inter-school Olympic sports within all universities across west Africa. Hence, WAUG stands for West African Universities Game. This year edition which was hosted by University of Port-Harcourt, Nigeria after 4years which is the interval tradition on which WAUG is held features both female and male students in about 16tournaments.

The games involved are as follows: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Judo, Squash, Tennis, Handball, Swimming, Table tennis, Taekwondo, Volleyball and Scrabble. The hosting university, University of Port-Harcourt emerges as the overall winner and goes home with 75 gold medal, 36 silver and 24 bronze medal. Out of the whole 36 Universities that participated, University of Lagos, Nigeria won 16gold medal, 24 silver medal and 16bronze while the University of Cape-coast, Ghana attain 9 gold medal, 3 silver medal and 4 bronze.

The competition is actually an eye opener and an opportunity for students of local universities to see sport from an outside perspective. It actually serves as talent exhibition and discovery and project West Africa as goodly sport oriented and developed continent to outsiders.
