Hey everyone, Satoshi here!
I thought I would write an article about voting power and how to the make the most of it.
Some of these tips are obvious and others not too obvious. In any case, I wanted to outline some of my best voting practices in order to reward good posts and at the same time maximize my own curation rewards.
To Maximize Your Voting Power :
Don’t let your voting power get to 100. This is because 100 is the maximum. If you let your VP reach and stay at 100, you are essentially wasting any voting power that you would be generating. Ideally, in a perfect world, you want to reach 100 and then immediately vote on something. But for most of us, once our VP reaches the 90s, it is probably a good idea to use it to vote and curate some articles.
If you have more than 1000 SP, use your slider. If we are honest, we can say that not every article deserves a full upvote. Using our slider, we can distribute our votes to more articles across the community. Also, the more SP you have, the more you can afford to decrease your slider and vote on more posts.
Keep in mind how long it will take you to recharge to 100 VP. If you know how fast VP recharges, you can tailor your voting habits so that you don't end up with very low VP and in essence, having your votes end up being worthless.
For me personally, I only have time to log in to Scorum once a day in the evenings to read posts, so during that time, I try to decrease my voting power so that the next day I login, it is close to 100 VP. I typically vote on posts until my voting power reaches somewhere around 70-80 VP. The following night, my voting power has gone back to 90-100 VP. This is so I can upvote good posts with the most VP I can, while at the same time maximizing the SP I can get by curating.
Depending on your schedule, you can regulate your VP and vote accordingly if you know how fast your VP recharges.
How long does it take to recharge my Voting Power?
The easiest way to figure out how long it will take to recharge your VP is to click on your VP up at the top of the page when you are logged in. It will tell you approximately how long it will take to recharge.
According to my calculations, at the time of this writing (8/26/2018), you recharge .833 VP every hour. So in a full day (24 hours), you will regenerate 19.99 VP. If you want to know exactly how long it will take to regenerate your VP to 100, just follow this handy-dandy equation:
Subtract your current VP from 100 and then divide that by .833. The result is how many hours it will take to recharge your VP to 100, assuming that you don’t vote for anything else. The graph of this equation looks like this:
As an example, if your VP is 50, it will take 60.02 hours, or almost a full two and a half days to get back to 100 VP.
It takes 120.04 hours (5 days) to fully recharge your VP from zero.
For those who don’t want to do any calculations, the rule of thumb is that for every 20 VP you use, it will take 1 day (24 hours) to recharge.
80 VP = 24 hours (~1 day)
60 VP = 48.02 hours (~2 days)
40 VP = 72.03 hours (~3 days)
20 VP = 96.04 hours (~4 days)
0 VP = 120 hours (~5 days)
Final Thoughts
With this article, I hope it sheds some light on how your VP recharges and how you can use this knowledge to make the most out of your votes to not only reward good posters, but also to maximize your curating rewards as well.
As always, thank you for reading.
