It's been a while since Scorum language-specific domains launched. Now Scorum has English (main) domain + 18 language-specific domains, including scorum.id in which I highly engaged.

When I first joined Scorum bounty program, I had impression in mind that Scorum thought of sports as universal language, but it needs to be translated to many languages so many people can enjoy it. That's why Scorum recruited many translators in its bounty program. And that's why Scorum launched many language-specific domains. I think that was a brilliant move, with many domains Scorum can reach out to people from different languages.

Problems

The concept is great, but the implementation is another story. I know that Scorum devs are busy with many things, but I need to point out what Scorum needs to do to improve its specific-language domains. If you speak those languages and look at those domains, you can tell that they look unprofessional.

I speak Indonesian so I will only speak about scorum.id. The first thing that any Indonesian people will notice when they open the site is the weird translation. The interface is, in some parts, poorly translated because it's been done through crowd source method. The translators translated words by words via online spreadsheet without knowing the context, that's why the translation looks weird. Some words just don't make sense. That's why I said it looks unprofessional.

The other problem is there are not many large SP holders in the domain, so it's hard to reward good writers. Without proper reward it's hard for good writers to keep on writing good stuffs. To tackle this problem, I am now organizing large SP holders in scorum.id to create curator group to reward good writers. I hope this can help a little.

Solution

I think the solution for both problems I mentioned above is quite simple: Scorum needs to recruit local staff that speaks the language. Local staffs can help Scorum with weird translation so the site will look professional, and they can help Scorum to reward good writers writing in those languages.

The easiest way is to recruit respected and reliable users from each specific-language domains to manage and kickstart those domains. They will responsible for the domain in general and rewarding good writers (curating). All Scorum needs to do is empower them with SP delegation to reward good writers and also to reward themselves.

Without local staff that speaks the language I don't think Scorum language-specific domains will be successful, and that would be the last thing I want.
