The beauty of losing in football and betting (sports)!
When Arsenal played Chelsea at the last Europa final, I was utterly disappointed as the goals came pouring in....but I soon switched emotions mode before the match endedd. When they lost in 2011 to Birmingham at the then Carling Cup final, I was utterly heartbroken. 2006 Champions league final saw an immature me......Over the years, Arsenal FC has given me mixture of pains and happiness; but I am grateful. Going all the way as a football enthusiast, while viewing/watching a match and placing bets on same match is one hell of a full time job. Not easy, never will it be! But there seems to be social/philosophical benefits, or so I think.... I am a fan of stoicism, which teaches one to be indifferently tolerant of pain/disappointments etc. Not just a fan, I am also a die hard student of that great school of philosophy. I have learnt earlier that disappointment has a way of not just toughening you up, but also makes you grow up very soon in knowing how to handle ups and downs. One of the worst thing that can happen to you as a sports fan is not just to have your favourite team lose, but also to lose the bet you placed on the team in the given fixture. Sports is a school whether one believes it or not. In my hood where we have viewing centres, you find young boys ranging from adolescents to teenagers viewing football matches with the calmness of a full grown adult. This didn't happen in a day. Those who are starting on football fan-dom can easily be noticed by how jittery they appear as their team coasts through some nervy moments. Not that the older ones do not occasionally feel the heat, but they have a way of spreading their minds on various outcomes and utilising that " whatever will be will be" spirit to give the self a softer landing come any outcome of the match The point at which a new kid on the block of football (sports) fan-dom begins to rub minds with the older ones and endure jeerings and cheerings, while also dishing out same as the tables turn on their opponents, is the point the maturity has begun. In no distant time, the stoical spirit gets unleashed and you begin to readapt the lessons learnt to other areas of your life. Not everyone is usually at home with this school. Some cann't stand being taunted, while some prefer to hear the results than watching things play out on the screen. Either side of the divide, I have found out that PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY WITH A MAJOR IN STOICISM, IS ALWAYS THE TAKE HOME OF SUCH SPORTS FANS AND THEY ARE NATURALLY AHEAD IN DEALING WITH LIFE'S LEMONS! So many of us here can resonate with what I am talking about. Not that this does not apply to other sports I chose only football and betting cos those two are my mainstay... How wonderful our societies will get, if/when we take life in our stride, not given to over reactions such as anger and suicidal thoughts.

SOME MOMENTS THAT CHANGED THE HISTORY OF SPORT (1)
Moments, emotions, photos, victories, defeats, inventions, intuitions, genes, signs, symbols. The history of sport is always alive, constantly evolving, always inclined towards change, innovation and modernity. There have been so many moments when the sport has changed, has seen a new side, seen unknown things. Here are some spectacular moments that have changed the sporting world, its history, its substance, its spirit! 1. TOMMIE SMITH: OLYMPICS BLACK POWER 1968, Mexico City, the Olympics serve Tommie Smith and John Carlos, first and third in the 200-meter race. To protest against racism, the duo choose the podium for their message, raising their gloved fist closed in black. 2. BARTALI AND COPPI PASS THE BOTTLE ON THE GALIBIER AT THE TOUR DE FRANCE, 1952 Bartali and Coppi on the Galibier Tour de France 1952, Galibier pass, one of the most feared and inaccessible ascents. This historic photo, taken by Carlo Martini, is a symbol of all rivalries, and of the human greatness that sets them apart. Both Coppi and Bartali have always played on this photo, never revealing who was passing the bottle to the other. 3. MARADONA, LA MANO DE DIOS, 1986 Maradona anticipates the English goalkeeper Peter Shilton with his hand Some destinies no one can change them. Quarter-finals of the World Cup Mexico '86, quarter-finals between England and Argentina, nations that only 4 years clashed in the Falklands War. Zero to zero at the start of the second half, then she arrives "la mano de Dios" with which Maradona unlocks the result. Five minutes later he signed the most beautiful goal of the century. In the post-match interview Maradona will say the famous phrase "The goal was scored a little with the head of Maradona and a little more with the hand of God". Argentina will then win the World Cup. 4. 10 BY NADIA COMANECI, 1976 Nadi Comaneci during his historic exhibition At the Montreal Olympics in 1976, at the age of 14 Nadia Comaneci enchanted the world, becoming the first gymnast to receive the highest score on asymmetric parallels. The vote, after an astonishing performance, was delayed because the computers were programmed to register votes up to 9.99, the "10" was not absolutely foreseen. In place of the 10 was placed in the computer the 1.00 vote which was actually multiplied ten times. 5. LOU GEHRIG'S FAREWELL ADDRESS, 1939 Lou Gehrig during his farewell address Lou Gehrig's beautiful farewell address to New York Yankees fans. The speech took place at the Yankee Stadium in New York, after the baseball champion heard about his illness, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (gehrig's disease). 6. THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FOR ERIC ABIDAL, 2011 The comrades carry Eric Abidal to heaven Two cases away from the diagnosis of a liver tumor, Eric Abidal, Barcelona full-back, returns to play a soccer game. Enter at the end of the game instead of Captain Charles Puyol, welcomed by an unforgettable ovation. He will win the Champions League and he will raise the cup instead of the captain, before raising it he is thrown into the sky by all his companions. 7. THE MEETING BETWEEN TYSON AND HOLYFIELD IN LAS VEGAS, 1997 Myke Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield, after the first fight in which Iron Mike was defeated, the revenge is played in Las Vegas. At the third round, however, the unthinkable happens, something never seen in a ring. Tyson loses his head and tears off part of Holyfield's ear with a bite. He is recalled but tries again shortly thereafter, he loses through disqualification and his boxer license is revoked for a year. 8. THE TRAGEDY OF SUPERGA IN WHICH GRANDE TORINO DISAPPEARED, 1949 The great Turin On May 4, 1949, at 5.15 pm, the Fiat G.212 trimotor crashed into the support wall of the garden of the Basilica di Superga due to the fog. The great Turin, one of the strongest teams in the history of football, ended up at that moment. The world was shaken, at the funeral almost a million people took to the streets in Turin. The scudetto was assigned to the Turin table. The trauma was such that the following year the National team decided to go to the World Cup in Brazil with a three-week ship trip. 9. THE FIRST GREEN JACKET BY TIGER WOODS, 1997 Tiger Woods with his first "green jacket" That April 13, 1997 not only changed the life of Tiger Woods, I changed golf and world sport. Another proof of the existence of pure talent, there is destiny, the child prodigy TIger Woods, started golfing even before kindergarten, wins the first in a long series of Masters becoming the greatest golf legend and a piece of sports history. 10. THE IMPOSSIBLE PUNISHMENT OF ROBERTO CARLOS, 1997 Friendly match between France and Brazil, Roberto Carlos is in charge of pulling a penalty from thirty-five meters. Part of his classic run in small steps, he kicks, the trajectory of the ball goes completely out of the door mirror and then back in and beat Barthez. A shot that went against all the laws of physics and impressed the whole world. There are some spectacular moments that would forever change the face and spirit of sport. Amidst the turn of the above events, sit back while I bring to you more of these amazing events. References
